In 1836, he was appointed the first Federal Architect and Engi neer by President Jackson. He designed the main building of the Columbia Theological Seminary, the original building of the State Hospital, Courthouses in Marion, Chester, Edgefield, and the Washington Monument. The Fireproof Building, in Charleston, and designed by Mills, is said to be the first building of fireproof construtcion in the United States.
