C., was appointed this week by the .Washington commis sioners to be chairman of the Dis trict OPS volunteer committee to organize a rebellion of District housewives against inflation. Her picture appeared in the Times- Herald of Washington as she re viewed some of her duties to her son and daughter, Donald and Mary Lucretia. Mrs. Detwiler is a former resi dent of this city, daughter of the late Hazel L. Scaife, and Mrs. Scaife who lives in Washington, who made their home here until moving to Washington a number of years ago. Her mother before marriage was Miss Eliza McCaslan, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. M. McCaslan, and a sister of Mrs. W. B. Owens,- Sr., of this city. The family has other relatives here also. In the article Mrs. Detwiler de scribed herself as a typical, mid dle-aged, middle-class housewife.” Her husband is a Navy electronics engineer. In planning for the or ganization w'ork Mrs. Detwiler said the city organization will include not only housewives but all iseg- ments of the community. She ! said inflation in meat prices in Wash ington have made it necessary for her and thousands of other house wives, to serve hamburger, hot 1 dogs, stew and fish. Ointon Granted 1,272,000 Cu. Ft. Of Natural Gas The Federal Power commission last Thursday granted Laurens, Clin ton, Newberry and Blacksburg a share of the natural gas from the Transcontinental pipeline. Laurens received a maximum of 1,239,000 cubic feet per day; Clin ton 1,272,000; Newberry 1,184,000 and Blacksburg 293,000. The Washington dispatch said Laurens will build a 19 and a half mile lateral to the Transcontinental pipehne. Clinton and Newberry will jointly build 49 and a half miles of line and Blacksburg only 1,900 feet. Jones & Sons, Philco dealers of this city, is one of twenty-two Philco Radio and Television dealers of . North and South Carolina to win an lill expense cruise to Bermuda, June' 16th through June 22, sponsored by i A. K. Sutton, Philco distributors forj this area. Mr. Thomason won this cruise in competition with over 400 Philco dealers in the two states dur ing April and May. Mr. Thomason will join the other cruise winners in Charlotte Friday night, June 15, where the group will entrain on a special Pullman train for New York City. The group will sail from New York Friday, June 16, on the Queen of Bermuda, arriving in Bermuda on Monday, June 18. Elaborate plans have been made for all types of entertainment on the luxury liner, and a special program of entertainment has been lined up for Bermuda, featuring a show by Broadway stars, imported from New York especially for the occasion. In addition, Mr. Thomason will be a special guest at the horse races in Hamilton. Bermuda^ June 20, and at a water canival at the famous Elbow Beach pool. In addition, plenty of free time will be available for golf, swimming, shopping and enjoying life leisurely. Mr. Thomason, when questioned yesterday, said, ‘’I am really thrilled at the idea of going to Bermuda.” He will return to the city on Satur day, June 23. Darrell Franks III In Naval Hospital Friends here of Darrell Franks,) ! son of Mrs. J. P. Prather, will be interested to know he arrived in New York last week from Arabia where he has been stationed the past ten months with a naval unit. Mr. Franks was stricken with a fever while on board ship home and is convalescing at a naval hos pital in New York, where his con- i dition is reported as improved. Manager Arrington, Laurens Radio Station, Dies Suddenly John Arrington, Jr., 39, manager of radio station WLBG, Laurens, died early Saturday morning at his home on Mock street. He had just returned to the house after doing! some chores in the yard when he was stricken. He lived but a short time after the attack. He 'was in his accustomed health except that he was joist recovering | from an operation performed several months ago to remove shrapnel from wounds he had received in the war. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Kennedy Mortuary by the Rev. J. E. Rouse and the Rev. 1 J. L. Satterwhite. The body was shipped to Lebanon, Va., for burial. Mr. Arrington came to Laurens in October, 1947, to open up radio sta tion of which he had since been manager. Prior to that he had had radio connections at other places, including Newberry and Au gusta. He was born in Lebanon, Va., the son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Arring ton. He attended the University of Virginia and was a bombardier in the Air Force in World War II, hav ing been shot down in the European theatre of operations. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Schaack Arrington of Lau rens, his father, who now lives in Miami, Fla., and one brother, Rob ert Arrington, who lives in the same city.
