INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA
FIRST RAILROAD
The people of Charleston realized that with the growth of
towns such as Columbia, Augusta, Camden and others, they
were losing importance as the chief city and chief market. In
order to bring trade to Charleston, its business men built the
longest railway in the world. The track was laid from Charles
ton to Hamburg, a small town on the South Carolina side of
the Savannah River. The train made its first run in December.
