Sunday evening the baccalau reate sermon was preached by Dr. W. R. Turner, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of this city. The elementary promotion ex ercises wjll be held Friday morn ing beginning at 9 a. m. That night the final graduation exer cises will be held. The salutatory will be gvien by George Jacks and the valedictory by Paul Chandler. In order to bring trade to Charleston, its business men built the longest railway in the world. The track was laid from Charles ton to Hamburg, a small town on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River. The train made its first run in December. 1830.
