methods; but his forthrightness ap
peals to everyone.
Perhaps it is a defect that too,
many of us voters are waiting forj
someone else to come up with a
real creed. This isn’t the way our
forefathers operated! They thought
their policies out for themselves. I
think more of our political, labor
and business leaders need to take
time to think, pray, meditate, and
see if they can’t rediscover life’s
essentials.
I get lots of letters these days
asking me, “What can a man be
lieve, anyway?” They come from
business managers
and production
line workers alike.
One man is as con
fused as the next.
One doesn’t like
labor unions. An
other doesn’t like
government b u-
reauocracy. The
next doesn’t want
price fixing. Still
another doesn’t
want the United
States fighting
wars in Korea. But all have a good
word to say for General MacArthur.
MacArthur reports that Japanese
intellectuals have been shocked by
the inability of even our military
officers to tell the Japanese what
we believe in as a nation and whati
our long-term objectives are.
We don’t want the tyrannies of
Hitler or Mussoline or Stalin. We
don’t want British socialism. We
don’t want communism; but, for
the moment, we want MacArthur!
We are fed up with the political
mumbo-jumbo out of Washington.
We are relieved and encouraged to
find someone who has a policy even
if we don’t agree with it.
Whal Americans Want
I think most Americans want
sbmething substantial they can grab
hold of—something to believe in, {
an ideology, a creed, a way of life.)
Something with more substance 1
than a 50-cent “dollar bill.” There
was a time when the church gave
a meaning of life to people. Appar
ently this isn’t fashionable any
more. Our neglect of the spiritual
lag in Western civilization.
What was it! that satisfied so suc-
has brought about a great cultural
cessfully the wants of our fore
fathers? Certain, it wasn’t fast au
tomobiles. television, the 40-hour
week or a soft life.
I believe the happiness and suc
cess of our ancestors in this coun
try was the result of their spiritual
and courageous approach to prob
lems. The roots of our vitality are
not economic. They go deep into
the ethical and spiritual soil. Today
the trouble is that a startling lack
of religion has crept into our na
tional economic thinking.
Ask the average person what has
made America great and he will
probably reply. Our vast resources
and our unparalleled production
system.” People who think this way,
have the cart before the horse.
Spiritual Rejuvenation
I am not a social scientist. An- 1
thropologists tell me, however, that
in order for any society, primitive
or highly civilized, to hang together,
it must have a courageous, but
simple rational creed, a set of spir
itual values with strong emotional
appeal which give meaning to life.
This, I believe, is what we have
lacked in the Western World since
the disillusionment of World War I.
This is what most Americans
today long for—a vital, creative
forward-looking creed. We would
like more brave leaders to help im
plement our beliefs for us. Many
Americans do not like MacArthur’s
Practical Suggestion
Did you ever stop to think what
might happen if your neighbor
hood turned off the TV or forgot
the corner movie for a night, a
week, and instead met one night
each week in some house to dis
cuss ways to save our Union? The
force which such grass-root think-
idea is explosive! Think of the
ing of this kind could exert on the
electorate—on the nation and the
world.

A good sachet for dresser draw- 1
ers and linen closets can be made
by tying together a half ounce of
lavender flowers and a half tea
spoon of powdered cloves in a small
sack.
Keep your old toothbrushes and
use them for cleaning combs. For
ivory combs scrub the comb with
the brush and alcohol. If you want
to dry clean a comb, use oatmeal
with the brush until clean.
It’s easy to get scalp and hair
clean, especially if it’s greasy, by
wetting the hair first with tepid
water, then rubbing in if the juice,
of two or three lemons. Rinse off
with hot water, then with tepid
water.
If you like a faint aroma of vio
lets on yoiy handkerchiefs, wash
them in hot water into which you
haye placed a muslin bag with a
small piece of Orris root.
Stockings will wear longer if
they're rinsed in tepid water as
soon as they’re removed from the
longer if they’e rubbed just lightly
feet. Heels and toes on hose wear
with a piece of paraffin.
A soothing bath for tired feet can
be made from warm water and a
bit of vinegar. If the heels hurt,
place a small powder puff inside
the shoe at the heel for a cushion.

Atlanta, Ga., May 7.—In spite of
seasonally smaller arrivals at sou
thern markets this week hog prices
showed general declines ranging
from 25 cents a hundred pounds at
Atlanta to mostly 75 cents at Nash
ville, the Production and Market
ing Administration reported today.
Very slack hog Marketings left
prices mostly steady at Montgom
ery, and steady to 25 cents higher
at Georgia-Florida-Alabama pea
nut-belt plants.
The southern declines were influ
enced by prices 40 to 50 cents lower
at Chicago, where the hog market
was under price pressure most of
the week. Hog receipts at 12 big
markets through Friday were the
largest since the last week in Janu-I
ary. The Chicago closing price
range for 190 to 270-pound butch
ers was $21.25 to $21.60.
More Cattle
Slightly more cattle showed up
at southern markets this week. Ar-
rivaW at six leading market centers
totaled about 8,500 cattle and 5.400
calves, in comparison with 7,600
cattle and 5,400 calves a week ago.
At. principal Florida auction and
packer yards, receipts totaled about
3,500 cattle and 1,200 calves, in
comparison with 2,900 cattle and 1,-
025 calves a week ago.
Virtually all markets showed
lower prices for cattle and calves
following issuance last week-end of,
OPS regulations which reduced fu-'
ture beef prices. Both slaughter
cattle and stocker animals shared
in the price decline.
In the North eGorgia trading
area, sluaghter cattle and calf
prices dropped 50 cents to $1 a
hundred pounds. Stocker cattle
prices were steady to 50 cents low
er. In Florida, slaughter cattle
prices finished steady to $2 lower;
stocker calves as much as $5 low-1
er.

To get the soap out of your hair
or off your face after washing,
rinse with a solution of a few drops
of aromatic vinegar in clear water.
Those whose hands perspire
should wash them with a solution
of boraric acid and water. Use one
part of the acid to 20 parts of water.
