Did he make a military blunder
when he advised the President the
Red Chinese would not enter the
Korean war? In fact, is General
MacArthur infallible as his wor
shippers claim, when it comes tp
matter both military and political
in the Asian sphere? These are the
questions which will be answered
in this up-coming probe into our
foreign policy. |
But, according to observers here,
the real question which is now be-
for the people is: would you be
willing to make the decision which
might brihg Russia into the war on
the side of Red China and thus
start World War III with all that
means, including the fact that it
likely would mean that the United
States would go it alone with an
all-out war on both ocean fronts? |

organization can be an important

it is the rankest defeatism to think

In the meantime the great de
bate on foreign policy continues in
the congress with temper flaring
and near fistcuffs between Senators
Capehart of Indiana, Humphrey of
i Minnesota and Lehman of New
York, with Senator Taft of Ohio
seekmg the role of the peacemaker.
And in the midst of this debate,
the one great statesman of his time,
the author of the bi-partisan, or as
he called it the “unpartisan** for-!
eign policy. Senator Arthur Van-
denburg of Michigan died. In his
place. Governor Mennen Williams
of Michigan has named Blair
Moody. Washington newspaper
man for the Detroit News. Moody
is labeled a Democrat and a liberal
his appointment was not re
ceived with enthusiasm by Senator
Homer Ferguson. Michigan senior
senator. As a matter of fact, poli
tical observers declare the GOP
leadership in Washington will sore
ly miss the leavening influence and
the wise counsel of the late Senator
from Michigan.

The marvelous growth of the cele- 1 serve to live longer and risk ques-
bration to a national and interna-1 tionable and unnecessary loans with
tional day can be attributed to the
heart and living interest it possesses
for almost every home and every
person of a mother loving heart.
The custom of wearing a white
carnation was modified so that dis
tinction might be made between
those whose mothers are still alive
and those whose mothers are dead
but still live in the hearts of their
children. White dowers are worn byj
the motherless, and red flowers by
the others.
It is a beautiful and appropriate
custom to set aside a special day on
which to do homage to the mothers
of the land. Whether they are with
us still or gone on—we owe them
much more than we will ever be
able to pay.
And so on “her day” — to the
mothers long gone whose memory we
revere, let us bow our heads in rev
erence and gratitude for what they
meant to us and the Inspiration they
have left us. And to those who live,
every son and daughter should be
able to say from the bottom of his
or her heart, “God bless you
mothers, every one.”
RFC Should Go Now
For more than a year the Recon
struction Finance corporation has
been the target of charges of in
fluence peddling and favoritism. The
odor has been offensive to say the
least, and the investigation has
shown beyond a reasonable doubt
the need of house-cleaning. ^
There has been a loud and gen
eral demand that the agency is not
needed and should be Abolished. The
Senate has approved a new director
upon the recommendation of Pres
ident Truman, which 'showsohe .does
not favor the abolition of the agency
which has poured millions into ques
tionable loans. The banking and cur
rency committee is now holding
hearings on the question of whether
to continue the agency or scrap it
entirely.
Ex-President Herbert Hoover,
Jesse Jones, Senator Harry Byrd,
representatives of the National As
sociation of Manufacturers, and
other witnesses have testified that
the depression period for which it
was set up way back in the early
Roosevelt New Deal days has loqg
gone and that its continuance means
keeping R.F.C. in competition with
private banks and is materially add
ing to the current inflationary press
ures. Mr Jones, first director of the
taxpayers’ money.
As Washington Sees It...
(HE NAHONAl SCENE
Special to The Chronicle.
Washington, May 8.—The nation
has been on an emotional jag over
the MacArthur affair. The country,
however, is in a position of crisis
today where the head instead of
the heart should prevail. Everyone
without exception has sympathy
with General MacArthur over the
fact that He was ousted from his
high command in the Japanese and
far eastern theatre, and there is no
question but that this sympathy for
the “underdog” has ruled the re
action to his ouster.
His speech before a joint session
of the congress w’as a triumphant
defense of his position—his dis
agreement with the President and
the joint chiefs of staff, as well as
the United Nations, over prosecu
tion of the war in Korea, and the
commiteee and the armed service
hearings before the foreign affairs
committees in congress within tlie
next 10 days will likely give the
American people a clear insight in
to the facts which determine this
nation’s foreign policy in Asia.
