C, Friday and were week-end visitors in Washington, D. C. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Abrams and children visited Mr. and Mrs. Cal vin McNeil in Greenwood Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bennett and Bobby were Sunday guests fo the latters parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. May, in Union. T-Sgt. and Mrs. Raymond Frank lin and children of Alberquerque, New Mexico, are visiting the for mer’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Franklin. Mrs. Bo Gardner and small son, Rickey, have joined Pfc. Gardner in Louisville, Ky., for a visit of several months. Mr. and Mrs- Algie Abrams and son spent Sunday in Greenville with Mrs. Abrams’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Graham. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Holtzclaw of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Starnes and Cynthia, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Cochran, Dot and Teddie of Whit mire, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Girk and Peggy <X Ware Shoals were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Har old Darnell. Mrs. E. J. Willingham, Mrs. Car- son Nabors, Mrs- Guy Prater and Harold Willingham were Monday visitors in Greenville. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. O’Dell, Bud O’Dell, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil O’Dell and children, Col and Mrs. Fred Ross and children were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tem pleton in Calhoun Falls. Harley Lyons spent a few days last week in Elkin, N. C, visiting relatives. Mrs. L. J. Brock and Judv were Tuesday visitors in Greenville. Mrs. Sallie Crocker of Whitmire, spent the week-end with her daughter, Mrs. John Gaskin, and Mr. Gaskin. Mrs. Frances Giles and Miss Toni Stroud attended the junior-senior celebration at Lan urday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Sloan at tended the kick-off dinner of hte Laurens County chapter of the American Cancer Society in Lau rens last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Rube Melton and children attended a birthday dinner honoring the former’s father, R. J. Melton, in Gastonia, N. C.. Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Estes of Cross Anchor, and Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Reynolds of Lancaster, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ed- Th wm lomas. Mrs. Marie Price and Janice and Mrs. Guy Prater and C in day were Sunday visitors in Newberry. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Richey of Greenwood, Miss Melda Carol Dean of Clinton, and Mr. and Mrs. Wil- lena Kitchens of Newberry, were guests over the week-end of Mr. and Mrs- John Burnett, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Moore And son are spending several days in Columbia with Mrs. Moore’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Adams. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Owens and man and daughter and Mrs. S. S. son, Mr. and Mrs. Jaynes Timmer- Kennington spent the week-end at Chimney Rock, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chandler and son were recent visitors in Spartanburg. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Alexander and son visited Mrs. N. M. Slice in Greenville Saturday. On Sunday Mr. Alexander attended the funeral of Mrs. Will Kirkland in Lyons, G Wa Jackie Lovelace and room mate, Miss Evelyn lUrrison of Columbia, were week-end guests of the former’s parents, Mr. and Mr a Jama Lovelace. Mr and Mrs. J. H. Davenport, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Davenprot, Jr., and Ronnie visited the former Mr. Davenport’s brother, George Davenport, who is a patient at the Veteran's hospital, in Columbia the past week-end. Mrs. Joe Abrams and Bruce were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Kay in Greenwood. Misionary Union To Meet The Baptist Misionary Union will hold its May meeting Tuesday, May 8, at 7:30 in the educational build ing. The program chairman, Mrs. Harold Murphy, has arranged an interesting program. The hostesses are Mesaames Lester Hair, Rolfe Clark and W. W. Hair. W.S.CS. May Meeting Members of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service of Epworth church will unite for their May meeting Tuesday evening at 7:00. Mrs. Mary Simpson will present a program on “Be Strong In The Lord.” During the social hour the hostesses will be Mesdames Joe Giles, Johnny Moore and J. J. Ab rams. Receive Honors At the state Training Union con vention held in Florence last Tues day Miss Myrtle Murphy won sec ond place for the state in the Bible Sword Drill. .Myrtle represented the northwestern division. Con gratulations are in order for her splendid work. At this same convention, in com petition with 32 choirs, the Joanna Baptist choir received a rating of A-minus. Jaycasa Name Officers The Joanna Junior Chamber of Commerce met last Thursday for the purpose of electing their offi cers for the coming fiscal year. The officers elected ara as follows: President—Alec Crawford. 1st Vice-President — Johnny Moore. 2nd. Vice-President — Marion Waits. Secretary and Treasurer — Kelly Directors — Hack Prater, Cecil Bishop, and Fred Ellis. Taylor-DaTuposl Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Taylor of An niston, Ala., announce the engage ment of hteir daughter, Jeanette, to Alva Davenport of Joanna and Washington, D. C. Mr. Davenport is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Davenport, Sr., of Joanna. The wedding will take! place May 13 at the First Baptist church in Anniston. Miss Whitmirs Honorsd Miss Patsy Whitmire, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Whitmire, has received two ratings of Excellent, 1 1 one from Winthrop college and one from Clemson college on a skirt project in home economics. Con gratulations to Miss Whitmire. With Tha Sick Mrs. Marilzy Butler has been transferred to Spartanbur General hospital. * J. W. Collenback was hospital ized a few days last week for treat ment Mrs. Modell Moon is a patient at Joanna hospital following surgery. Hugh Edward Brock is a patient at the local hospital following a mill accident on Friday. Talmadge Long was a patient over the week-end with teeth ex- rtactions. Mrs. Edith Lee is a patient at the hospital following surgery. Mrs. Betty Corley of Little Mountain, and Mrs. Gussie Os borne are patients at Joanna hos pital for treatment. Big Wrestling Bout At Joanna Saturday Night Another top-notch wrestling card is scheduled at Joanna ball park Saturday night. May 5, with some real action promised with the Beck er brothers of Brooklyn, N. Y., tak ing on two of the roughest men to ever crawl through' the ropes. Bob by Becker will try to tame Jack O'Brien of Dallas, Texas, in the opening bout. O’Brien is the bird with the long whiskers who put on such a rough house tight on open-j ing night Jimmy Coffield, Denver, Colo., known as Gentleman Jim, will battle it out with Chick Gara- baldi, St Louis, Mo., in the semi-, final match. The final bout will match two nationally known grap- plers in Jack Moore. Oklahoma, against the famous George Beekcr of television fame.
