Calls For Swift
Abolition of RFC
Washington, Mar. 13.—Outcries
against “influence-peddling” mush
roomed! in congress today and the
house Republican policy committee
demanded swift abolition of the
Reconstruction Finance corporation.
Several bills were ready in both
houses to liquidate the multi-bil-
lion-dollar federal lending agency.
Democrats and Republicans alike
joined in the attack.

has “degenerated into an instrument
for the peddling of influence” and
now engages in distributing gratui
ties and rich political plums.
Simultaneously, Representative
Canfield (R-NJ) told the house that
an RFC request for $17,835,000 for
administrative expenses for the fis
cal year beginning July 1 will be
turned down by the house appro
priations committee.
Canfield is a member of the com
mittee.
The New Jersey legislator said
the house group has refused to con
sider the RFC request.
Although the RFC has big funds
for lending, the rejection of its bid
for administrative funds presum
ably would mean the agency’s end.
A Democratic backfire against
critics of the aAnipjstratinn start
ed when Representative Wayne L.
Hayes (D-Ohio) took the house floor
to accuse Republican national chair
man Guy Gabrielson of ‘‘influence
peddling” with the RFC.
Hays charged that Gabrielson ob
tained $18,500,000 in federal loans
for his own company over a three-
year period and collected $100,000
for his services.
“It seems Mr. Gabrielson has been
doing a little influence peddling
himself’, Hays told the house.
Hays also declared that two sen
ators put on pressure to get Recon
struction Finance.corporation loans
for Gabrielson’s firm, the Carthage
Hydrocol company.
When Hays left the house floor,
a reporter asked him the names of
the senators. He refused to iden
tify them publicly then but said he
would do so on a radio program
tonight.
Gabrielson could not be reached
immediately for a comment. His of
fice said he was enroute by train
from New York to Washington.
Hay’s accusation drew an angry
counter blast from Representative
Martin (R-Mass.), the house GOP
leader, who said the story of Gab-
rielson’s RFC loans was aired in a
senate report last year.
Martin said there was no fraud
involved and “no such intimation.”
Pionting his finger at Hays, Mar
tin said Republicans want a com
plete investigation of influence-ped
dling charges whether it hits Demo
crats or Republicans.
Representative Hoffman (R-Mich)
charged Hayes was trying to give
the RFC a clean bill of health by
showing it gave loans to Republi
cans as well as Democrats.
The explosion touched off by
Hays came amid these other devel
opments:
1. Chairman Fulbright (D-Ark.)
of a senate banking subcommittee
proposed a broad new inquiry into
the “moral standards in govern
ment”—and the codnuct of con
gress itself—as a sequel to the cur- ,
rent RFC investigation.
Among those who raised their
voices for liquidating the big fed
eral lending agency were Senators
Byrd (D-Va., and Aiken <R-Vt.) r
and Representatives Rees (R-Kans.)
and Vursell (R-I1L).
