ed this life February 28, 1950.
Sleep on, dear daddy

To take you from this world of
sorrow
To a lovely place of rest.

In that fair heavenly home
"Tis a land where all is happiness
Up where sorrow is unknown.

As Washington Sees It...
THE NATIONAL SCENE
Special to The Chronicle.
Washington, March 1—The depart
ment of defense announce during this I
past week that defense spending has!
jumped to $5 billion per month. That
means only one thing, that there will:
be in the near future another order
from the national production author-
jity further restricting the list of es-
isential civilian goods and further
cutting allocation of materials for
! non-essentials.
j This military spending figure
jumped from about $2 billion a
month back in November and De-1
cember, so when the orders get into i
production it will take quite a bitej
out of the materials supply. And!
when the producer go to filling these i
military orders under a priority rat-|
ing, there just won’t be enough left
qver for the non-essential commodi- i
ties now being produced for civilian
consumption.
There are many folks who believe
that because the retail stores are fill
ed with all the gadgets and house
hold appliances and stocks seem
| plentiful, this talk of scarcities is
phoney talk. These folks are kidding
!no one but themselves. For right
• now, as was’ pointed out • above, is
' the lag between placing of defense
! orders and getting the tanks and
planes and guns and ships in the
werks. The military, for instance, ex
pects new medium tanks to be com
ing off the assembly lines about
June, heavier tanks later in the year.
And so this lag is the last fling of
manufacturers before the tight
clamp-down comes. Many scarce ma
terials have already disappeared in
sofar as civilian goods are concerned.
There have been many complaints
from small business firms for these
get hurt first, for many smallun-
essential items manufactured by
small firms have been hit first. In
dustry advisory committees on both
1 the allocation and pricing fronts,
however, working with controls ag
encies are seeking to correct some
faults in the distribution of materials.
It appears that Price Administra
tor Michael DtSalle is going to stake
his reputation to sink or swim on
the issue of meat. Many representa
tives orf the meat industry are com
ing down here to Washington to tell
him and others it is impossible for
him to control either the price or
the amount of meat and that he is
just building up black markets. Mr.
DiSalle, however, doesn’t believe
them. He has issued a livestock or
der, covering beef, pork and lambs.
This order (1) prohibits any one
who has not been in business from
Jan. I, 1950, up to Feb. 9, 1951, from
engaging in the business of slaught
ering; (2) forces all current slaught
erers to register with the OPS, and
(3) prohibits these slaughterers from
killing more than a certain quota,
based, on theri business during the
past year.
