Makes Statement On
Rate Increase Refusal
Commenting on the action of the
South Carolina Public Service com
mission in denying the request of
the Southern Bell Telephone and
Telegraph company for a rate in
crease, J. M. McAlister, South Caro
lina manager of the company, said,
“We are deeply concerned over the
refusal of the South Carolina Public
Service commission to allow rates
that are necessary to meet the ever-
increasing cost of providing tele
phone service and to pay a reason
able return to the people who have
invested their savings in our busi
ness. The commission’s action, un
less changed, will seriously hamper
us in our efforts to furnish the peo
ple of South Carolina the expanding
and improving telephone service they
need and are demanding.
"For the past few years, South
Carolina has been growing faster
than any state in the southeast. To
meet the tremendous demand for
telephone service which has accom
panied this growth, the Southern
Bell company in the last five years
has raised and invested in telephone
facilities in South Carolina more
money than was invested in the
state during the preceding 67 years
of the company’s existence. Money
invested in these new facilities did
not come from customers through
the payments they make for tele
phone service. . It came from people
who had money to invest and who
were persuaded to invest in the tele
phone business rather than some
other entepri*.
“We expect immediately to petition
the commission to grant a rehearing
1 of this matter in the public intereat.
We hope to convince them that a
financially healthy telephone com
pany, capable of meeting the press
ing communications needs of our de
fense program and the increasing
civilian demands tor service on the
farms and in the cities, is essential
10 South Caro Lina's continued prog-
rsss.
“We cannot play our fuH part in the
state development unleu our income
is sufficient to cover all costs of
furnishing telephone service with en
ough left over to pay a reasonable
return to the people who have in
vested their savings in our business ''

HEADACHES — A well known radio
artist whose career was threatened by
persistent headaches of a pounding,
thrdbbing nature. Medication failed
to bring relief and his broadcasting
activities were frequently curtailed.
Hearing of an aunt who had recover
ed from Neuritis under Chiropractic
care, he decided to see what spinal
adjustments would do for him. X-ray
photographs were taken of the spine,
and a malpositioned vertebra was lo
cated and adjusted. Seconds arfter the
first adjustment the headache ceased
and has returned since only at in
frequent intervals, each time subsid
ing following adjustment. _
