Santee's 'Profit' Is Loss Santee-Coaper has just released a new annual report showing a net in come or profit of $1,203,081, for the 1949-50 fiscal year. Just how real is 'this profit we shall attempt to show without going too deeply' into the realm of higher mathematics. Santee-Cooper paid, in lieu of tax es, a sum of $34,412. If Santee-Coop er had paid taxes at the same rate as a private utility, its tax bill would have been aibout $2,000,000. That means Santee-Cooper was excused from paying $1,965,588 in taxes dur ing the year. Santee-Cooper paid interest of $735,350 on $39,014,000 which it still owes the federal government. But the federal government gave Santee- Coopr outright another amount of aibout $04,000,000. If Santee-Cooper had had to pay interest (2.5 per cent) on this amount—as any private util ity would have to do-r-rits total in terest would have been $1,585,350. That means Santee-Cooper was ex cused from paying $860,000 in inter est during the year., Adding the amounts Santee-Coop er was excused from paying in taxes and interest, we arrive at a total of $2,825£88. Any private utility, in figuring its annual balance sheet, would have to include those items as expenses. If Santee-Cooper had not been ex cused from paying those items, its annual report would not show a prof it of $1,203,081. It would show in stead a loss of $1,822,507. The loss is afbsoifeed, every year, by taxpayers, who get no interest payment on the $34,000,000 given Santee-Cooper and who are deprived of the taxes that Santee-Cooper ought to be paying—The News Sc Courier.
