gretful impossibility for a vast morn
ing army of hurried coffee lovers.
' Now their pe'riod of denial is finally
at an end. The bachelors, the kitch
en-less, the sleepyheads, all can—in
'a jiffy—make real coffee right in the
| cup with the new one-cup coffee
bags.
, Individual cup coffee bags make
a cupful of real coffee in a single
easy step. Just as with tea bags, drop
a coffee bag in a cup, pour in rapid
ly boiling water and steep to any
strength desired. Coupled with the
| simplicity of preparation is the eqaul-
ly attractive fact that afterwards,
'there are no loose, messy grounds or
dirty pots to contend with.
On top of all the time and labor-
saving convenience of coffee bags,
coffee made this way tastes the same,
has the same aroma and body as pot-
browed coffee. That's becasue Steep
olator coffee bags contain lOO'T pure
coffee—no concentrates or solubles—
i which is freshly ground just before
packing And to preserve their fresh-
; ness, coffee bags are vacuum packed
| in sealed glass jars, 20 to the jar.
Retailers, at the same time, hap
pily discovered that not only were
coffee bags a heavy volume item, but
also that they offered up to 600%
more profit per pound than regular
vacuum packed coffee. Currently, re
tail prices for the bags packed 20 to
a vacuum sealed jar (7.04 oz. net wt.)
range from 57 to 65 cents per jar.
The vacuum jar incidentally, is the
standard pack for all brands offer
ing Steepolator coffee bags.
Individual cup coffee bags look
: and work like tea bags except that
•they contain 100% pure ground cof-
' fee—no concentrates or solubles—
and produce a real cup of coffee with
exactly the same flavor, body and
aroma as pot-brewed coffee. And
'coffee bags do away with loose, mes-
| sy grounds, wasteful measuring and
dirty pots. Boon to the consumer,
| profit to the retailer, already more
'than a dozen top brands in the East,
South and Mid-West are selling their
coffees in Steepolator coffee bags.
■ Other firms are scheduled to in-
i troduce their brands in coffee bags
i after the first of the new year. A f
that tune, also, a country-wide con-
! sumer program of educational adver
tising and publicity gets under way.
•Steepolator Coffee Bags" is the
registered trade name of the coffee
jbags and the individual bag packag
ing process. It appears on the labels
of all brands of coffee packaged in
this manner This item is now avail
able in the area at Dixie-Home Sup
er-Market.
U. S. To Open
Jap Peace
Talks This Week
i Washington, Jan. 21—The United
States will open in Tokyo this week
the second stage of Japanese peace
negotiations designed to produce a
ratified treaty between the Allied
! powers and Japan before the end of
i the year.
The biggest unsolved problem fac
ing Ambassador John Foster Dulles
on the eve of leaving for the Far
East is how to meet the desire of
such countries as Australia and New
Zealand for security against a rebirth
■of aggressive Japanese militarism.
There has been some thought in
the government here that the best
j solution might be a Pacific security
I pact, somewhat like the Atlantic pact.
Dulles is carrying a presidential
| directive to get on with the Japa
nese peace treaty development as
i rapidly as possible.
The primary purpose of the trip
, is to get the ideas of Japanese gov-
| ernment and political leaders on trea-
i ty provisions and particularly to
| clear up views as between Ameri
cans and Japanese on security jjrob-
i lems.
In all negotiations the U. S. is
I operating essentially as a go-between
with other World War II victor na
tions on one hand and the Japanese
j on the other. After months of study,
Washington decided last year that
the best peace treaty would be one
which restored Japan’s independence
with no strings attached, the convic
tion here being that post-treaty re
quirements would produce more
trouble than good results.
Negotiations in the first stage were
opened by Dulles last fall when he
talked with representatives at U. N.
headquarters of Russia, Britain, and
all other countries with direct Far
Eastern interest.
Those talks disclosed two things,
according to the ofificial estimate of
their progress. First, there were no
unsolvalble problems involving coun
tries other than Russia; second, Rus
sia almost certainly will not go along
with creation of a treaty which Rus
sia cannot in effect dictate.
Therefore the second stage of the
talks opens with every evidence that
the Soviet Union and Communist
China will not be in on the treaty
drafting, but that the U. S. and more
than a dozen friendly countries in
tend to go ahead anyway.
Dulles is prepared to tell the Jap
anese that the U. S. expects the trea
ty to be one which wild restore them
to respect and equality in the family
of nat^pns, though their prewar em
pire must be written ott. U. N. mem
bership for Japan also is an Amer
ican objective.
Kitchen tongs are handy items to
have among your equipment. Use
them for lifting vegetables out of
saucepans and oven and for serv
ing.
Leftover vegetables can be perked
up if they’re served with browned
butter to which a few bread crumbs
have been added.
