Cotton Seed Scarce
The price of cotton seed was so at
tractive at ginning time that most of
them went right to the oil mills.
That’s what our certified seed man,
Bob Garrison, and our cotton special
ist, Harry Boylston, both tell me.
Now the world is calling for a big
cotton crop. And folks are wonder
ing where the seed will come from.
The seed over most of the Eastern
Belt were of poor germination the
past season. So now folks from other
states have been combing South Car
olina, and other areas too, I guess,
for good planting seed in quantity.
And they have found very few, I

' ton planting seed might do well to
! look around and locate their needs
before it is too late. In view of this
situation, there will likely be a lot
of speculation in good planting seed
And you know what that does to the
price.
Industry On The Farm
The past summer Walter Haul. In
dustrious fanner of Lexington, put
up 45.000 caaet of okra and toma
toes at the cannery out there on his
farm He grew moat of it and his
nctghoor* the balance Irrigation
multiplied the karvaat on hit And
he canned some other things too
Farm processing "We need to do
more of that." says Director Watkins
Producers of raw products have us

great Lincoln had nothing to do with
that, he was on that aide, and that
made his name anathema. But time
has largely healed that
Boys Are That Way
It couldn't have happened here back i Our folks lived close and saved,
when we were naming counties, j They had to. For a living came rather
Sherman’s march of fire was too i hard in the stone hills of the Dutch
Fork, and only a frugal ptople could
thrive there.
I was almost ready for long pants
before I had a ready-made suit. It
was a hand-me-down from a relative
in town, with Norfolk belted coat and
knickerbocker pants. It was really
the thing. All of my clothes before
were homemade, mostly out of jeans,
as tough as leather. And the pants
were what we called three-quarters
length. They reached about six inch
es below the knees to protect our
stockings. Stockings were made all,
the way at home—carding, spinning,
dyeing, and knitting. A fall, while
at play, wbuld bust the knees out
and they would then ravel away. So
the pants protected them at the
knees. After we sat in those pants
a while they stayed bent a bit at
the knees and made us look like we
were fixing to Jump all the time.
Our handkerchiefs were all ob
long. made out of flower sacks, two
to. the sack. When they were new
you could read “Guaranteed First
Patent” on one and "Ballard'a Obe
lisk Flour” on the other one. But that
toon washed out.
* We wore wool hats mostly. They
were cheap contraptions that took
on the shape of 'a cone once they got
wet. We called that going to seed'
Shoes were usually the brogan
type. They were very stiff-bottom
ed shoes of rough leather that you
held together in front with a buckle
They hurt your feet at first, until
you got them broke in, and then they
wore good. But they were as hard to
break as a mule. Once I got a pair
of shoes that were a little better
that had a brass guard on the toe.
I was awful proud of them.

More Gram Than CaMIe
“More interest than ever before is
being shown in planting pastures,”
says County Agent McLaurin of
Marlboro “In fact, there are more
pastures in sight than cattle to graze
them,” he concludes.
Good for that* All too often in the
past we have gotten the cattle be
fore the grass. And that won’t work
any better than the cart before the
horse.
But when we put the needed mon
ey in these modern pastures, we need
to have enough cattle to market that
grass through, Unless we are grow
ing pasture Jtist because it looks
pretty.
“Yes, graze. But don’t overgraze.”
That’s what our pasture men, Woodle
