the Blalock clinic where she is re
ceiving treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. Harris Covington
and children of Hamlet, N. C., Mr.
and Mrs. James G. Monroe and
children of Latta, spent the Thanks
giving holidays with Misses Lois and
Iona Blakely and Aldme Blakely.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sims spent the
week-end in Madison, Ga., with the
former’s brother-in-law and sister,
Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Maddox, and son,

Fla., was the guest during the holi
days of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hunter

Charleston, spent the Thanksgiving

Stone. Mrs. Stone accompanied
them home for a visit and will also

County 4-H Group
Can Get Lespedeza
Leon O. Clayton, state boys’ 4-H
club agent, has notified the county
agent’s office that 25,000 lespedeza
bicolor plants have been made avail
able to 4-H club boys of Laurens
county through James W. Webb, co
ordinator of the South Carolina Game
and Fish Department, county agent
C. B. Cannon stated.
A maximum of 5,000 plants will
be given to a club boy with 1,000
plants as a minimum. Any club boy
wishing to secure these plants is re
quested to file for same through the
county agent’s office.
Lespedeza bi-color produces seed
that is good for bird food and is used
as a border strip and to prevent eros
ion on steep slopes.
Joanna Hornets To
Have New Manager
For '51 Season
Dan Kirby, veteran catcher and
manager of the Joanna Hornets of
the Central Carolina baseball league
last season, has been released as
manager officials of the Joanna Ath
letic Association announced during
the week. Officers and directors are
seeking the services of a top-notch
playing manager for the 1951 sea
son., but no announcement has been
made. ' /
Other players released along with
Kirby were Johnny Brock a late
comer to the first base position last
season, Roy Marion last year’s short
stop and a brother of Marty Marion
o. jt. LouL Cards fame. Also Bill
Harris a pitcher, with a fair won-lost
record.
The catching position will be
strengthened with another receiver
to help Cecil Farmer with heavy
work.
These standout players from last
year’s team to be retained will in
clude Babe Ellis, Fred Marsh, Paul
Fouts, Rube Melton, Hal Walthers,
| Johnny Moore and Cecil Farmer. The
status of Tony Mazurek, last year’s
centerfielder, and George Beirshank
the very dependable pitcher-infield
er hasn’t been fully derided yet.
Joanna is looking for some real
top notch players to fill the first base
position, shortstop, centerfield and
catching position. They are also in
terested In contacting two or three
top flight pitchers to help Rube Mel
ton and Johnny Moore.
Officers for the 1951 season are
Allen Barron, president; Carl ’ Fran-
zen, vice-president; Elvin Abrams,
business manager; Alex Crawford,
secretary-treasurer. The board of di
rectors were all reelected recently
and are Joe Delany, W. D. Beckom
and W. J. “Bill” Dees.
