Ip Modem Milk House Built Under Drive Idea Could Be Used On Many Midwest Farms Like most people, farmers have a desire to make use of all available space in and around their service buildings. Few, however, thought of locating a modern milk house under a driveway. That this is possible is shown in the accompanying picture. Like so many midwestern bams, the two- story structure is located so that about half of it (extending from front to rear) rests on a ridge of land. In this case the ridge is about eight feet high. Only that portion of the first floor, which is built on the low ground, is used for milking operations. This eliminated the job of excavating FOR SALE — Gas range in fair condition. Blakely-Burton’s Hardware 8c The above picture shows one idea the farmer might use to make use of all available space in and around service buildings. under the ridge. Also, however, it created the problem of building a milk house which would be conven ient to the milking area and not be affected by drainage from the slop ing land. Since the driveway to the mow followed the ridge line, it was a comparatively easy job to construct the milk house beneath this natu ral dirt “ramp,” and to connect it to the adjacent stanchion section of the bam. The roof of the milk house is strengthened with heavy steel beams. Laurens County Council Of Farm Women Holds Fall Meeting Mrs. Robert Wasson presided at the fall meeting of the Laurens County Council of Farm Women held ( Saturday at Rocky Springs church in , the Oak Grove community. More than one hundred council members . and guests attended the meeting. A highlight of the program was i an interesting panel discussion on l “Plans of Work for 1950-51,” led by Mrs. Warren Tinsley. Thirteen de partmental chairmen participated, each giving the goals for her phase of council work. Mrs. Ben Robertson, of Taylors, was guest speaker, using as her sub ject “Home Beautiful,” and giving special emphasis to “Bulbs for the Home.” Being an authority on daffo dils, much of her talk was devoted to that subject. Her lecture was il lustrated with colored slides, which were shown following lunch. Representing the Laurens Ex change club, John Hugh Mahon and Marshall Abercrombie spoke to the group of the “History, Organization, and Plans for the Laurens County Fair.” Miss Gertrude Lanham, district home demonstration agent, presented the “UN Flag” and made fitting re marks concerning the flag and Unit ed Nations day observance. Shady Grove club, Mrs. B. W. Cooper, president, received the at tendance gavel for having the most members present. Clubs in each dis trict having the best reports were announced as follows: North district, Greenpond; East district, Long Branch; West district, Hickory Tav ern and Eden (tied); and Central district, Oak Grove. Mrs. Hugh Bonds Workman, for mer president of the council, was recognized for having been elected Piedmont district director at the dis trict meeting held in Winnsboro last Saturday. Special music was furnished by the county chorus. Oak Grove Home Demonstration club served lunch. The Shiloh club invited the council to meet with them in the spring. Such a step is not as thrifty as it may seem. Experiments have shown that hogs fed com alone in dry lot re quire 11 to 12 bushels of corn per hundred pounds of grain. When a good protein supplement is used in the ration, 100 pounds of pork can be produced with five and one half to six bushels of corn and 50 pounds protein supplement. With hog and feed prices what they are, this means that every bushel of cbm fed with a good pro tein supplement is worth $2.25 to 32.75 per bushel, while hogs fed com alone return only $1.50 to $1.75 per bushel of corn consumed. Hogs fed grain and a balanced supplement will reach market weight in five and one half to six months. FOR SALE—Rye grass seed. 10c lb.
