Marines Stage Big
Celebration As Old
Glory Flutters
Seoul, Korea—A dirty-faced U. S.
Marine raised the stars and stripes
over the American ambassador’s res
idence here today.
When Pfc. Luther R. Leguire of
Tampa, Fla., finished his job and
stood back to watch old glory flutter
in the breeze, the capital city of
Seodl was in American hands, 12
days after the Inchon landings.
The flag raising at the looted res
idence of Ambassador John J. Muc-
cio in the western part of the town
was not the solemn affair you might
have expected after almost two
week’s of bitter fighting to take the
town.
The Marines made it a celebra
tion. They joked and yelled at Le
guire while sprawled on the front
lawn as a precaution against snipers.
The Marines fixed small American
flags, found in a liberated building
during the street fighting, in their
helmets and on their rifles.
A shot rang out and a sniper’s bul
let whistled over the heads of the
Marines watching the flags-raising.
One of them spotted the sniper
on the roof of the burning Dakosa
palace which housed the United Na
tions offices before the Tetreat last
June.
The leathernecks were for going
after him in a body. But their com
pany commander said one Marine ;
could shoot at the sniper “because
there is only one sniper.”
The Marine took aim, fired, and
the sniper fell off the roof.
Two other ceremonies of Impor
tance took place.
At 3:20 p. m.—17 minutes before
the ambassadorial flag was raised—
the same set of stars and stripes was
; run up to the top of a flagpole cn
the Russian embassy grounds. It
was run right down again, and the
Marines said the gesture had the
same meaning as “thumbing your
nose at Moscow.”
A few minutes later a tattered V
American flag was found in Muc-
cio’s home amidst the debris left by
the Communists.
The taatered flag was burned on
the walk beneath the spot where
the clean, new flag was raised a few
minutes later.
