MocArthur Has
Evidence of 1950
Soviet Arms Aid
Lake Success, Sept. 18.—General
Douglas MacArthur was reported to
day to have informed the United Na
tions he has positive evidence that
RUssia supplied munitions to North
Korea in 1949 and 1950 and that
Communist China supplied “trained
manpower.”
Informed quarters said MacArthur;
made his statement in his latest re
port to the Security Council as com
mander of U. N. forces in Korea. The
reprt was received' by U. N. Sec
retary-General Trygve Lie t hi s
morning, but it has not yet been
made public.
Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister
Jacob A. Malik has insisted that
Russia has given the Korean Com
munists no military supplies since
1948, when the Soviet Army was
withdarwing from North Korea.
There was no'indication what sort
of munitions MarArthur referred to
nor whether his reference to Chi
nese “trained manpower” meant
troops, advisers, or perhaps tech
nicians.
Chinese Nationalist Delegate T. F.
Tsiang charged last week that two
Chinese Red Divisions from Man
churia were in action in Korea but
U. N. sources said they had no con
firmation of this.

MORE PEOPLE ARE
READING THE CHRONICLE
THAN EVER BEFORE!
Washington, Sept. 18.—The State
Department said today there have
been no known peace overtures
from the North Korean communists.
Reporters were told by Press Of
ficer Lincoln White that the depart
ment has “absolutely nothing to con
firm” a London report published in
on Italian newspaper tha* feelers
have been made.
White said the normal channel for
proposals for a settlement would be
the United Nations. He said al
though the North Korean communist
tegime is not a U. N. member, it has
“representatives” in the U. N. He
named them as Russia’s Jacob Malik
and Andrei Vishinsky.
♦
Rome, Sept. 18.—Rome’s inde
pendent Giornale d’ltalia said today
in a London dispatch that North
Korean authorities are seeking to
negotiate for peace.
The dispatch attributed the infor
mation to non-official Indian circles
at London and said it came from;
New Delhi. According to it China
and India would serve as mediators.
Giornale described the dispatch as
its own special service. There was
no confirmation from any other
source.
In London, Indian government of
ficials said they knew nothing of
any such move. The British Foreign
Office likewise said it know nothing 1
of the report.

The Low Down From
Hickory Grove
Boiled down—devoid of big or dif
ficult words—our U. S. A. is in its
present state of confusion, and on
thin ice, for 2 main reasons. We
been reading Freud and Max when
we should have been reading Aesop.
Freud—and the lack of discipline—
has given us our horde of delin
quents. Marx has filled the Bureau
chairs there on the left bank of the
Potomac, wth socialists. And a so
cialist is just a freshman commun
ist. And both these menaces came
from the neglect of our Aesop. We
been a sucker of the first water.
We have listened to pink palaver
about letting the Govt, cover the Na
tion with great and gigantic river-
valley athorities. Congress, spell
bound, says, go ahead. We remain
mum. Mum until income tax day
when we don’t find the Govt, elbow
ing ds there at the tax window to pay
ite share. It pays no taxes—we dig
a/little deeper.
We stand by as the Govt, potato
wagon backs up at the river edge and
dumps its huge train loads to the
fish. We buried one OPA and its
agonies—congress now flirts with re
viving the corpse.
But America can yet be salvaged.
We must get our horse-sense out of
the mothballs. Also our Resp. That
is you and me I am talking about.
Yours with the low down,
JOE SERRA
