COMMENTS ON
MEN AND THINGS
By Spectator
Is South Carolina “progressing?” i
That word “progressing” commonly
indicates marching to improvement,
though one can progress toward a 1
condition not altogether better, but
we have another word “retrogres-.
sing” that is used at times to indi-!
i cate a march in the wrong direction
I I catch myself using the words.*
'marching and march: they are com
! monly used in Spanish. Como march
| an sus asuntos? Means: How do youi J
!affair? march? Or, as we say: “How'
U everything going?'' I recall a pot
able address by President Leguia of
Peru in which he referred to his
Administration in this fashion: “Le-
guismo es el pueblo en marcha”—
the country going forward.
We say “my watch isn’t running
well”, but some young ladies at Win-
throp used to stmie when a stud
ent from Cuba remarked “my watch
isn’t walking.” In recent months I've
been using a watch which certain
ly didn't run; in fact it was so slug
gish that it didn’t even walk: it drag
ged along, very, very sluggishly.
South Carolina is prospering. ‘ A
recent advertisement of South Car
olina in The Wall Street Journal
brings out a fact that we citizens of
the State might rejoice in: “that
this State has attracted 800 indus
trial plants, costing nearly three
hundred million dollars, since 1945;
and, in addition, 1040 existing plants
have spent two hundred and four
[million dollars in expanding their
facilities". Let’s see what that means:
At least four hundred and fifty mil
lion dollars of new capital poured
into our State in four years and a
half, using the lowest figure. That
is progress toward a higher economic
level, beyond a doubt. Just guessing
wildly that means at least twenty
five thousand new jobs, a hundred
thousand people enjoying a more
abundant life, stores, insurance men,
everybody receiving a share, even
Uncle Sam with his income taxes,
as well as the taxes on everything
that is bought, from cigarettes to
baby oil, from cosmetics to 10-cent
jewelry.
It is probably an underestimate
to suggest that fifty million dollars
in new money circulates in our State
every, year. Certainly we welcome
the 800 new industrial enterprises,
but the expansions of the 1040 plants
prove that this is a good field; South
Carolina has been "tried in the bal
ances" and found worthy.
Let us make South Carolina a hos
pitable State for industry. All our
people share in some measure from
a general high level of well-being.
Our public schools especially con
tribute to thousands of children
much more than their parents pay
in taxes; the ^largest taxpayers are
the Cotton Mills, the Power Com
panies, and the railroads.
Most men may express surprise
on hearing that women own 65 per
cent of the Nation’s wealth today.
Twenty years ago the women owned
twenty billion dollars in liquid as
sets, but today they control a hun
dred and thirty billion. I observe
the words owned and control. I sup
pose the editor I am relying on is
using the words accurately—owned
twenty billion 20 years ago, but con
trol 130,000,000,000 today. A general
impression is that they control all
the wealth, with indifference to the
unimportant fact that the title is
sometimes in the name of the hus
band.
The magazine editor writes cas
ually in big figures, as though he
were a member of the White House
group of bright lads and visionaries.
Says the editor: This, ($130,000,000,-
000) includes only (please note the
word only) only cash, savings de
posits, checking accounts, and Gov
ernment bonds, but does not include
