CLINTON WINS
PLACE IN FINALS
BY TOPPING WATTS
By DONNV WILDER
The pennant winning Clinton Cav
aliers battled their way into the fin
als of the Central Carolina play-off
by outlasting the Watts Warriors 2
to 1 in a 10 inning affair Tuesday
night.
The Joanna Hornets held a two
games to one edge over their semi
final foe. Ware Shoals, and was sche
duled to take to the field again last
night in what might be the final
-gamp of that series. However, if an-
other game need be played, in the
event the Riege'.s win, the game will
probably be played on a neutral field.
Jaamia Wins In Eleventh
The Joanna Hornets took a one
game edjps over the Ware Shoals
Riegels Monday night but they had
to go into the eleventh inning to do
their deed. The two squads fought
through ten scoreless innings before
the Hornets finally gathered in two
runs in the top half of the eleventh.
Joanna’s Johnny Moore hurled a
brilliant four hitter at the Ware
Shoalers but he was pushed in the
number of hits he didn’t give by
Riegels’ Andy Hawthorne and Jim
Voiselle. The two boys from Riegel-
town spread six hits well over the
batting order of the Hornets.
Pitcher Moore was walked in the
top of the eleventh, with two outs,
Roy Marion beat out an infield hit,]
and Marsh singled, driving home
Johnny Moore. Marion tallied a few
minutes later on a wild pitch.
Joanna's hits came in bunches of (
twos as Marion, Marsh and Ellis col-I
lected all of Joanna's hits with two i
apiece.
A. C. Phillips was the big gun for.
the Rtegelers with two hits in three
official trips up. Goolsby and Kara-'
kul connected with the remaining
hits, to bring the sum total to four
hits.
J
the
and stay in the., ball game. Hal
Blackstock was the man to throw a
wrench into Watts’ machine as he
leveled off on a double in the top
of the tenth. Charlie Gaffney came
through with a single which sent
Blackstock scampering home.
IwYton’s Roy Whittaker and Watts’
Bri'Hgps and Potts hooked up in a
steady mound duel with Whittaker
coming out on top by giving only
five hits while Bridges and Potts
handed out seven base blows to the
Cavaliers. Whittaker struck out four
and had his share of control in is
suing only one ticket to first. Potts
fanned five and walked three.
Mickey Livingston, who has been
fattening his .380 batting average in
the play-offs came through with a
couple of hits to be added to the
heavy swat mark. Livingston came
to bat five times in the setto winning
affair. One of Livingston’s hits was
of the two-base variety. Every Cav
alier except Prater, agish, and Whit
taker was able to garner at least one
safe blow oyer the 10-inning route.
Smith ado^d a single to his home
run to take \>p batting honors for
the Warriors.
Clinton’s Aravb^o fumbled one play
and Watts’ Alexahder misfired on
a play for the only errors of the
game.
