Traffic Count On
Two County Roads
Shows increase’ •

Columbia, Aug. 30—The State
Hghwajr Department this week re
ported an increase in traffic during
the first six months of the present
year, ks compared to the first six
months of last year, on the two roads
in Laurens county where periodic
traffic vehicle county surveys are
conducted.
Traffic counts of one week dura
tion during each season are made at
approximately 110 stations on rural
and suburban roads throughout the
state as part Of the highway depart
ment’s traffic survey program. Two
of these periodic count stations are
situated in Laurens county, one on
U. S. Route 76, 4.5 miles east of Lau
rens, and the other on S. C. Route
30, one-half mile east of U. S. Route
221.
On Route 76 an average traffic
volume ol 3,244 vehicles were count
ed during the first six .-months of
1950, as compared to 2,690 vehicles
in the same period of 1949, an in
crease of 20.6 percent. On Route
30 an average of 729 vehicles was
the traffic volume for January to
June, 1950, as compared to 711 ve-
hcles in the aaxne'period of 1949, an
Increase of 2.5 percent.
An average increase in traffic vol
ume of 13.2 percent, or from 130,-
972 to 148,230 vehicles, was recorded
for these periodic county rural sta
tions as a whole. There was an ov
erall increase of total state traffic
of 9.5 percent, with no sizable fluc
tuation in any of the different types
of vehicles except on U. S. Route
301, where out-of-state passenger
cars increased considerably in num
ber.

Unemployment Claims

Columbia, Aug. 30—Unemploy
ment compensation initial claims and
total weeks claimed increased in the
Clinton office of the Employment
Security Commission in July, as
compared to June.

curity Commission, announced this
week that initial unemployment com
pensation claims in the Clinton of
fice, which covers Laurens county,
rose from 151 in June to 305 in July
Total weeks of compensation claim
ed in Laurens county increased from
2,313 in June to 2,402 in July.
In the state last month 15,599 in
itial unemployment compensation
claims were filed, and 69,647 weeks
of compensation claimed.
Director Bush stated that the num
ber of initial claims filed for unem
ployment compensation in July in
creased 72 percent over the number
field in June, but was about 10 per
cent below the July, 1949 level. Tem
porary closing down of plants, par
ticularly in the textile industry, for
vacation periods was one reason at

erable number of claims being filed
by -workers ineligible for vacation
pay or bonuses.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Halibut Bake
(Serves 4)
l 2 pound salt pork, sliced thin
1 small onion, sliced
1 bay leaf
3-4 halibut steaks
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
3-4 cup finely crushed cracker
crumbs
1 tablespoon paprika
Cut half of salt pork in small
piece* and arrange in baking pain.
Cover with on:on slices. Place soxpa
. bay leaf on each onion slice. Place
halibut steaks on top of salt pork
and onion, then sprinkle fish with
lemon juice. Top with cracker crumbs
and sprinkle with paprika. Lay re
ing water at the right, rinsing water (ma i n i n g pork strips over top. Bake
to left. You can then wash with right
hand while left hand rinses.
If you rinse by letting steaming
hot water cover the dishes for about
two minutes, then you have hea:cd
in a moderate (375 degree F.) oven
for about 40 minutes.
