Better farming suggestions for Ju-
, ly by County Agent C. B. Cannon
show no letup for the good farmer.
Mr. Cannon gave these reminders:
Agronomy
Piant cowpeas, soybeans, or velvet
© | beans now. These crops can be used
for grazing, hay, or soil building.
If the acreage of prospective sum
mer forage crops is not sufficient for
farm needs, plant additional acreage
after thorough preparation of soil.
Plan for grazing during a possible
late summer drought. Get peanut
harvesting equipment and supplies
ready. Use mowing machine to clip
weeds in permanent pasture. Plant
1 grain sorghum now for October
grain. Watch out for cotton boll-
worm. For effective contol, poison
1 before worms are full-grown. Kill
the boll weevil.
Horticulture
Grow plenty of vegetables in gar
dens for canning adequate supply for
home use next winter. Pull sweet
corn shortly before mealtime or be
fore canning; it loses its sugar rap
idly. After harvesting place fruits
and vegetables in the shade at once
to hold their quality and vitamins.
Set out tomato plants for a fall crop.
Dig early sweet potatoes for early
sale when yields are 50 to 75 bush-
1 els per acre. Don’t let the garden
lag; keep up the plantings.
Insects and Diseases
Keep up the weevil fight. Spot
cotton fields where wilt losses are
present. Fight the housefly by ail
available means. DDT and other
materials such as lindane are avail
able, but use all methods. Control
Mexican bean beetle with rotenone
or cryolite dust or spray. Combat
peach brown rot. Watch for screw-
worms. Requeen bees. Use Exten-
. sion Bulletin 102, Garden and Truck
[Crop Insects, and'extension publica
tions on tobacco insects and diseases
to fight the pests. ^
Agricultural Engineering v
Have treftch, double-box, or other
type of silo ready when silage is
ripe. Use waste crank case oil to
I aid in rust prevention on plows, discs
and other bright .parts of farm ma- *
i chinery. Check over farm machin
ery and order needed repair parts.
Get the mower in good running con
dition for the hay season. Plan to
water the garden this fall, using the
well, small streams, or other avail- *
jaible sources of water supply; see
1 county agents for information oa
, garden irrigation.
