SCRIPTURE: Hie Book of Ruth.
Leaaon for July 14. 1954
The English language has a word
not found in the original languages
of the Bible; it is not in Latin, Ger
man or French for that matter. It is
the word “home.” But homes were
not invented in England or America;
the ancient peoples of the world had
homes even if they had no special
word for them. The story of Ruth
is a home-story, a family tale. It
i comes from the times of the Judges,
which were very rugged times in
deed.
To read the Book of Judges you
would think that everything was
plots and wars and murder. There
j isn't a peaceful story in the book. And
j then comes the story of Ruth, to
remind us that even in those terrible
times, there were happy people, peo
ple who minded their business and

The bright spots in today's vast
seas of misery are just wnat they
were in Ruth's time.
“A home is a place to go when ev-
O'erything else has shut up” is no:
♦j a true proverb. For if that is ail i*
6 is, it is not a home. It is only a
| boarding house and not a very at-
i tractive one at that.
To this day, there are fewer rii-
! vorces in the country than in me
cities, and one big reason for that
is that country families have to
work together, while city families of
ten have little in common. In the
country eveiybody turns to and does
something about the house, ‘every
body helps everybody else; while in
the cities where so much is done by
machines and houses are very sma.i,
there isn’t much a family can do
together.

* 1 leading tree care expert among the
things that shouldn’t happen to the
trees.
Martin L. Davey, Jr., head of the
Davey Tree Expert company of
Kent, Ohio, declares many trees suf
fer from the thoughtless actions of
campers and picnickers each sum
mer. To help safeguard helpless
arboreal citizens, he has issued the
following list of ‘don’ts’ for nature
lovers of all ages.
1 . Don’t hack the bark of trees
playing “Indian games” or for any
other reason. Even carving initials
on trees may stop sap circulation and
cause dead areas. These, in turn,
are entry point/for deadly infection.
2. Don’t builch fires under over
hanging branches or close to trunks
of Tees. Scorching may cause de
cline and even death of a tree.
