The administration’s drive to re
gain control of the Democratic par-
Icjty machinery in the states of the
“solid south” moves now into South
Carolina. There on July 11 contests
for the Democratc nominations for
governor and senator will be settled
in a primary election. The voters
will decide whether they want as
governor former Secretary of State
James F. Byrnes, a critic of the Tru
man fair deal, and whether they
want Governor Thurmond, the
States’ Rights Democratic candidate
for president in 1948, for senator.
The administration admittedly has
a tough fight on its hands to defeat
Mr. Byrnes, who has frankly said
he wants to be governor of South
Carolina to be in a stronger position
to attack what he calls Mr. Tru
man’s spendthrift and socialistic pro
gram. It would dearly like to see
Governor Thurmond, who took the
electoral votes of South Carolina,
Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana
away from Truman in 1948, defeated
by Senator Johnston, who has been
friendly to tht Trumanites.
