Governor J. Strom Thurmond, no.v
a caadidate for the United States
senate, declared Saturday he was
“not surprised'’ at the omission of
his name from the list of Democrat
ic governors who are to be invited
to dine with President Harry S.
Truman in Washington this week.
“A national congressional election
is coming up,” the governor said in
a prepared statement, “and it is time
once again to beat the tom-toms
against the South in order to win
minority bloc votes in doubtful
states in the East and West.”
Full text of Governor Thurmond’s
statement follows:
. t
“1 have read the Associated Press
story from Washington published in
our papers Saturday that Governor
Wright and I were not invited to
the White House for lunch with the
other Democratic governors follow
ing the national governor’s confer
ence, because we led the South’s
fight against the Truman civil rights
program.
“I am not surprised. A national
congressional election is coming up,
and me once again to beat
the tom-toms against the South in
order to win minority bloc votes
in doubtful states in the East and
West.
Says Is Symbolic
“The only reason I notice this pret
ty political affront to the governors
of the two most Democratic states
in the nation is because it is sym
bolic of something which should con
cern every Democrat who believes
{in the principles upon which our
i party was bounded, and who believes
j the 48 states have the sovereign
right to govern their internal af-
j fairs.
“Every day the issue beco-mes
clearer. Mr. Truman and Chairman
Boyle of the Democratic national
committee, who is also a product of
the Pendergast ring, are determined
to force their program of mixing the
races down the throats of the people
of the South, and they will even
stoop to the Kansas City level of
politics to accomplish their end.
“The South can cravenly bow to
this challc ige to our way of life,
which comes from a perverted, lead
ership of the national Democratic
party, or the South can fight back.
“I firmly believe the South will
fight back and use every power at
it# disposal to preserve our Con
stitutional right to govern and man
age our internal aifairc.
Will Fight Back
“So far as South Carolina is con
cerned, I know our people will fight
back. They fought back in 1943
when 90 percent of the real Demo
crats of our state voted to stand by
the principles and policies of the
Democratic Party of South Carolina,
and against those of the national
Democratic party The 1950 conven
tion of the Democratic party of
South Carolina said there would be
no retreat from this position.
“When the President refuses to
| recognize the Governor of South
(Carolina at a White Mouse function,
he dbes not snub the individual, but
he insults the people of South Car
olina. This latest incident comes on
the eve of a Democratic primary in
South Carolina. Apparently, - what
Mr. Truman is telling the people of
South Carolina is that if they elect
a governor and senator he does not
like, the State of South Carolina will
be snubbed by the White House.
“The people of South Carolina will
give Mr. Truman their answer to
his latest insult when they go to the
polls July 11.”

and then cast upon the land. Jonah,
set out for Nineveh. As soon as he
reached the environs of the city he
began to preach the wrath of God
upon the inhabitants.
The people repented and God de
cided to spare the city. Jonah went
out on the east side of the city and
waited to see what would become
of the place. *The hot sun beat down
upon the prophet’s head, and God
made a gourd to grow up over his
head. But the next day the Lord
sent a worm to smite the gourd and
it -withered and died. And Jonah
wished for death and he said. “It
is better for me to die than to live.”
Then the Lord declared that as
Jonah had had pity for the gourd,
so he, the Father of all, had had pity
upon the thousands in the city who
had never had a chance to find God.
The book oi Jonah should rebuke

W HEN the sign says "Stop,

But after that what? Must you
still move forward at a cautious
crawl or pay toll in jar, jitter and

N»t, good sir, when you’re at •
Buick’s wheel.
Yoti step on the throttle, move eas
ily, swiftly forward. Your wheels
dance—your tires drum-roll over
rail and plank.
But four gentle coil springs, one
on each wheel, are working their
magic—and you hear rather than
feel the rough spot you have
crossed.

That, of course, is only one

of discomfort your Buick’s built

For beside gentle coil springing,
every Buick rides on soft, low-

one boasts a rigid, weaveproof
