Memory Selection: Hosea 14:4. In the childhood of the race, God had called the Israelites out of Egypt, and his treatment of them had ever been loving and merciful, even when they went after strange gods. The heart of God yearned over the sinful people the time ot Hos ea wheh their destruction by the Assyrians was imminent. The wret ched people were scattered through out the provinces of the Assyrian em pire and the Ten Tribes of Israel disappeared from history. Some sup pose they were swallowed up by other races. * If the Ten Tribes did disappear from history, the words of God through Hosea were not dlscfeted For the blessings promised to the people in the future were condition al—they were dependent upon the people returning to God. They did not return to him and they did not return to their home land. Hosea draws a picture of Israel blessed of God in the days of their if we go back a few generations, ex cept for the Indians. At no time have we been able to make all intellectual men rich or famous. Just what it is that makes one man prosperous in busi ness and another man a failure isn’t always easy to point out. Some bus iness failures are diligent, hard working men, careful, thrifty, frugal and possessed of all the virtues. Life's reward to them must be in spiritual values; and who can say that in the final account before the Great Jud^e they may not have the lasting crown the imperishable rewards? Life among men is a slow process of improvement; in America, for ex ample, the standard of living has moved upward steadily and today we live so well that the remark of the Scotch lady to me is increasingly true; ‘‘Oh, you Americans have so much”! So we have, but how did we get it? Our great factories: were they giv en to us by the Government, or by any other nation? Is our soil richer than that of other lands? Are our people stronger^ more intelligent, more diligent than the people of other nations? Perhaps a third of all our people are sons and daughters of those who came to this country since the days of Grover Cleveland; and two-thirds of those who are today Americans are descendants of men and women jWho came to this land of opportun-1 ity since the Civil War. All the rest’ of us ^re from those who came over since 1607 at Jamestown, allowing for about a million who came over on the Mayflower and landed at Ply mouth Rock in 1620, counting all j those who proudly claim that noble ancestry. So we are all immigrants being their flesh and blood. Certain ly the conditions of living have been fruitful in a flowering genius. Men have had a chance here. The greatest Corporation in the world publishes-with pride that all its top-executives rose from the ranks they are salaried men, employees, even though of top rank. But look around you: we have many success ful men, though few have colossal fortunes. The man who owns his store or farm is a man who has fought his way up. And the others, many others, in positions of trust, are men of success. I know some South Carolina bank ers, insurance men, lawyers, doctors, pharmacists and others, who have breasted the waves and swum ashore. For fear that not all my friends are hardy seamen, I mean that they have succeeded.
