Heavy Sales Gain
Reported This Year By
Oldsmobile Dealers
Oldsmobile dealers sold 11,015 new
cars in the second 10 days of March,
marking a,71 per cent gain over the
same 10 days of 1949, it was announ
ced by S. E. Skinner, general man
ager of the Oldsmobile Division. Se
cond 10-day sales in March last year
totaled 6,448 new vehicles.
During the first 20 days of March
this year, Oldsmobile dealers have
delivered 22,637 new cars to cus
tomers. ' This is more cars than Olds
mobile sold in the entire month -M
March last year, when sales totaled
21,379 automobiles.
“We are pleased with the pufelic
I cceptance of our 1950 Futuramic
mdels, especially the Series “88”
and “98”, said Skinner in comment
ing on the sales pictute. “However,
we are not letting up just because
sales are at a record level. Our cur
rent series of “Rocket Round-Up”
meetings with dealers in. .25 cities
from coast to coast are designed to
maintain the enthusiasm and selling
pace that has marked 1950 to date.”
For the period from Januarv l
through March 20 this ye&r, Olds
mobile dealers have sold 80,361 new
cars, marking a 61 per cent gain over
the same period of 1949, when sales
through March 20 totaled 49,788 neW
cars. _

Gala Baseball Opening April 18
_ .Two of the strongest and oldest ri
vals in any league will meet on the
night of April 18 when Joanna will
visit the Clinton Cavaliers cash in
the first meeting of the two teams
this season.
A flock of celebraties are expected
to be on hand for the game and, the
lunch before the game. Sports wri
ters, governors, statesmen, and any
other kind of celebraty you might
want has been invited to witness the
two fast dubs In action.
It is beyond me to predict the out
come of this game since both teams
are of the fastest kind of species and
the clubs are both blest with the
two best managers in the league.
Claude Crocker holds the reigns on
the Clinton club and Dan Kirby is
the big mind behind the Joanna
crew.

The stadium has been enlarged
and the fence has been moved back
(a smart measure on the part of the
handlers of the Clinton club since
the Central Carolina clubs would
probably lose enough balls over the
old fence to pay for the new one).
5,000 persons are expected to be on
hand- for the big occasion and each
one is expecting to see just how fast
this highly rated stronger built Cen
tral Carolina league really is.
Both clubs are blest with strong
pitchers, good outfields, and men
who are able to roam the infield with
apparently little trouble.
Moore, Harris, and Cudd are the
fast boys from Joanna and any one
of them could be expected to be out
there on the mound when the um
pire shouts the first “play ball”,yell
of the Clinton season.
For Clinton the firemen could be
Whittaker, Cooper, /or Manager
Claude Crocker himself. All of these
pitchers have been shining off the
mid-training form and seem to be
in fine physical shape.
Both teams are also well adapt to
the 'hitting procedure of baseball
with some mighty big sticks being
swung for each team. Joanna’s first
baseman, Danielson is said to be able
to punch one out of any park in
these parts and judging from his
size I’m hot going to be, the one to
argue with them.
Clinton’s right fielder, Guy Prater,
who is originally from Joanna has
spent a rough time being ridden by
both the folks in Joanna and the
spectators in Clinton, but I expect
when his time comes he will be
busting fences with his usual form
no matter who is kidding him about
what.
Some comparison of the two teams
might could be drawn from their
recent encounters with the same team
Woodside of the Western Carolina
loop. Joanna edged past the Wood-
siders six to five while the Clinton
Cavaliers downed the squad by an
ther narrow score five to three.
When you look at the two scores
you might figure that the Clinton
team is one run better than Joanna
but don’ forget to look at the hitting
on both of these teams. Both teams
are loaded with men who are able
to hit a home run as a base hit. So
one Irun either way won’t mean the
balbgame for either team unless I’m
greatly mistaken.
PC Track Team Working
Presbyterian college’s track team
is working hard under the directors
and are expecting to walk off with
some of those cups given away at the
annual state collegiate track meet
which is held here every year.
The squad is centered around the
ten-second men, Walter Gooch,
Blake Watts, and Ken McCutchin-
son. These men hold the edge in
the 440, 100 yard dash and the re
lay team. These men on the relay
team are also the highly publicized
backs on the football team.
Clinton “B” Team Loses To Union
The Clinton high school “B” team
lost to Union last week by a high
running score of 18 to 10.
The Clinton team was held hit
less until the fifth inning when they
started hitting the big pitchers for
doubles, triples and home runs. The
biggest connection of the day was
made by Lynn Cooper who hit a
circuit blow with two of his mates
on deck. i . .
Lynn Cooper was the last of three
Clinton pitchers used against the
Union team. The first two hurlers
were Glenn McGee and Joe Spillers
who were promply pounded from
the mound by the sharp eyed boys
from Union. Cooper was by far the
best pitchei; of the day.
