LYDIA TO HOLD MAY DAY CELEBRATION

Phipps, who will reign over Lydia’s May Day exercises. The program
will include about 400 boys and girls of the community who will take
part in the “Parade of Nations” program. Each child will be dressed in
the costume of the country he represents and 15 folk dances of foreign
countries will be staged.
The entire program will be ruled over by Miss Liberty (Sherril
Humphries). Miss Davenport and Miss Phipps were elected by a pppu-
larity vote.

for unemployment compensation fil
ed during the past fiscal year with
the South Carolina Employment Se
curity Commission totalled 123,393,
of which 2,741 were filed at the
Clinton office, according to the an
nual report of the commission, is-
l sued recently to the General Assem-
! bly. The Clinton office serves all
of Laurens county.
J The largest number of initial claims
[filed during any one month of the
i 1948-49 fiscal year at the Clinton
office of the commission was the
447 claims filed during April. An
initial claim is the claim filed at. the
beginning of a period of unemploy
ment,

collections in South Carolina ‘are off

I Internal Revenue Office here re-
I ported the decrease at $20,148,561 for
th first nine months of the current
; fiscal year that ends June 30.
j Collections in the nine months
'stand at $139,988,274, compared
with $160,136,836 for the correspond- -
jing period a year ago.
He noted that March income tax
collections at $19,611,282 were $6,-
798,860 less than for the month in
1949.
Other federal taxes, such as the

call, telegram, and inheritance, also |
are off, Bowers said. They have to- !
taled $538,621 for the nine months,!

Drive Announced,

;cer campaign for Laurens county
I during the April drive has been an-
i nounced by Mrs. Sarah D. DeLoach,
commander of the county and dis
trict American Cancer Society.
The “kick-off” dinner was held
Friday night at 6:30 in the commun-
1 ity Hall. Brig. Gen. J. M. Arthur,
state campaign director, and Mrs. i
Paul H. Leonard, state commander,
were guest speakers.
The following campaign officials
were named:
L. W. Marks, director; P. A. Mitch
ell, special gifts; Mrs. M. T. Motes,
street tabs on “Tag Day;” Mrs. C. M.
. Breedlovg, general assistant; Wilbur I
Holcombe, chairman of the colored
drive with a quota of $900 and the
Kiwanis club will sponsor the busi
ness section. j

Immediately following the cere
mony Mr. and Mrs. Ballard left for
a wedding trip to Miami, Fla.
Melody Club Organized
The Melody club has recently been
organized in the community,,to reach
the young single girls and the young
married women. Their objective is a
choral club and to have planned
amusement once a month for chil
dren from 6 to 9 years of age. During
the year special features are planned
to include subjects that will be of
help and interest to this group.
The following officers have been
elected to serve:
