Good Roads And Grass
Good Roads!
I go around a lot. Have been im
pressed with the fact Jhat good roads
cover our state better than any other
that I have ridden about in. *
gl And now the so-called “farm-to-
$ i market roads” are rapidly coming
m ' out of the mud too. Many a dim by-
| road of a few years back now looks
y like main street. And others are
booked for this renovation that will
j.; make farm life better along them.
*•* The mile-stretches of just about
year-around green will likely at
tract stray stock in the winter w’hen
! natural grazing is scarce. We will
1 have to watch out about that. But
J similar greenery is fast finding its
way to the prepared pastures over
the state. And many a farm is now
getting some of its finest grazing
during the winter months from fes
cue and the clovers.
So now maybe we won’t have so
many cattle breaJung out of the old
winter exercising grounds that we
used to call pastures to get to these
green spots by the roadside. For
hundreds of farmers saw the won
derful winter grazing that’s possible
here on the recent state tour to six
counties in different parts of the
state. And many went on their
county tours too. To walk silent
ly into lush greenery in mid-winter
tells its own slory. And that will car
ry good pastures to many addition
al farms by thd time the days get
short again.
Clemson's new Extension Circular
345, "Tall Fescue.” tell the story of
how to have “June grazing in Jan
uary”. It’s free at your county agent’s
office.
Boys Are That Way
I’m going to ride on an engine!
Have always wanted to, but never
thought the chance would come. But
now it hafe, and I'm as thrilled as a
kid. Where is there a boy who ever
saw an engine that didn’t dream of
riding one!
The first one I ever-saw was old
number “1”, a^tiny wood burner of
the C.N. & L. Ry. that passed within
tw'o miles of our place in the Stone
Rills of the Dutch Fork on its way
from Columbia to Laurens.
I say "tiny" now. But it didn’t look
that way then. It was the biggest
and most frightening thing I had ev
er seen. I thought folks stood too
close to it when it came in to our
flag stop at White Rock. And I’d hide
my face in my mother’s skirt, as the
monster ground its brakes to a stop
for us.
It took us to. Columbia in an hour,
18 miles away. And, boys, that was
flying. Parents always held our coat
tails as We leaned out of the windows
to see those drivers roll. And on the
curves we could see our idol, old Bil
ly Graham the engineer, playing
tunes on the whistle that thrilled us
to the core. They usually carried
flaxseed along to go4. ejnders out of
our eyes with. '
As time want on I saw bigger en
gines. And they have carried their
thrill right on through the years. I
said something about this a few
weeks ago. I was just beating the
air, never thinking anything would
come of it. The day after it was pub
lished Bob Mellette of the Atlantic
Coast Line called and said my boy
hood ambition could be realized. He
had gotten permission from the pres
ident of the road for me to ride the
fastest■ enginesl^Wow! What a sur
prise that was. And a thrill too.
So now soon this countryman will
mount a heavy freight engine. I want
to see it snort and slip and pound
the rails with a great load. Then I’ll
get on a fast diesel, that burns up the
rdils with its human cargo, and come
back.
But the good time will not be over
then. For I want to tell you about it.
And what a subject I will have!
