County Gas Tax
Given As $7,017
For This Month
Special to Tie Chronicle.
Columbia, March 22—The gasoline
lax distribution to the counties of
Soutn Carolina this month Will total
$331,821, according to State Treasur

The distribution made from the
etate tax on gasoline is allocated on
ti monthly basis, according to the
■proceeds from the tax during the
jireceeding month. The counties of
the state receive five eents^of the
nx cent state gasoline tax, and the
(distribution is made on the basis of
the number of m^tor vehicle licen-
/cs sold in each county for Uie year.
The remaining one cent of the six

jtate retained by the S. C. State

schools in Laurens county are two-,
teacher schools, and there are 12,
Negro two-teacher schools in the
county. The county has three white
and one Negro three-teacher schools,
and one white and two Negro four-
teacher schools. Seven of the white
schools in Laurens county and four
of the Negro schools have more than
four teachers.

total of 91 schools in the 49 school
districts in Laurens county, accord
ing to the eighty-first annual report
ad the State Superintendent of Ed
ucation, which has just been issued.
Thirty-six of the Laurens county

Writing Book On
County Families
Mrs. W. O. Pruitt, of Washington,
D. C., the former Miss Janie Gar-
lington, of Laurens, visited in Lau
rens and Clinton the post week gath
ering data for her new book, “Pio
neer Families of Laurens County,”
which she is now' w-riting. >
Mrs. Pruitt is a member of the
National League of American Pen
Women and has previously written
two books which gained wide circu-
lation The titles of those books were
“Revolutionary Pensioners of South
Carolina” and the first volume of
"Migration of South Carolinians” 1
which is to be followed by another
volume.
Mrs. Pruitt is the daughter of the
late Charles and Lizzie Sullivan Gar-
lington of this county.
For a number of years she taught
in the Rock Bridge school near here
and made her home with the Davis
familv.

Seaboard Reduces
Passenger Fares
Effective May 1
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad
Company has announced a reduc
tion in it’s rouna-tnp coach fares,
effective May 1st through Novem
ber 15th. This new round-trip Sum
mer Excursion fare will be a 25 per
cent xeduction under the double one
way fare and approximately 17 1-2
per cent under the present round-
trip coach fare. Rodnd-trip tickets
will be limited to 30 days.
This new fare was established in
order to stimulate summer tourist
travel and to keep rail fares com
petitive with other forms of trans
portation. ' As ain example of the re
duction, the present round-trip six
months coach fare Atlanta to Wash
ington, D. C., is $28J5; the new 30
day coach fare will be $23.95. >'
Tfiis reduced fare will apply
and.from all points on the Seaboard
Railroad and also to Washington and
the East.
