The Presibyterian Blue Hose got
back on the winning road after their
Christmas holidays by downing a
stubborn Lyman Paficics cage squad
69 to 61. '
Hose men Down Lyman
. Behind Willy Dwight Groninger’s
25 points the Presbyterian hard
wooders came from behind a big lead
by the Pacifies in the last few min-
ut^es of the game Jo add* another win
to their grand total.
The Presbyterians were held at a
safe distance behind the Lymans for
almost the entire game but the hose-
men finally caught fire from the
spark held by Willy Groninger and
began playing the kind of ball the
Cintomans had seen before the
Christmas holidays.' *
A-t the outset of the game the blue
team floundered as though it was
the first time they had set fo(>t on
a basketball court. Big Ed Thomp
son appeared to be a little nervous
and the whole team just couldn’t get
together. Presbyterian’s* usually
smooth working plays just -wouldn't
click and at one time they, were
trailing the Pacififs by a 29 to 10
score.
In the second half the Presbyter
ians began showing up as they did
in the pre-holidays days.
Lew Hawkins began taking the
ball off the back board on^ the re-r
bound and Willy Groninger began
hitting the basket along with Kay
Hill, who had been connecting -all
through the game.
Hill and Gronniger were the only
two Blue Hosers who remained at
their own constant good ball"play
ing. .
. The Blue Hose w»ll have a lot of
work ahead of them before they are
ready for their tilt with Mercer,, of
Georgia, but no one seems to be
worried as to whether they will be
ready. Knowmg -Ctaude Crocker ev
eryone just takes it for granted* that
they will be at a fine peak for the
game.
Freeman Makes All-State
Curtis Freeman, Clinton high’s
holder -of the most valuable trophy
for the season of 1949/cdras been
named to Rev. Bell’s all state team.
Bell picks his all state team be
cause he thinks that a lot of boys
should be on an all state team who
aren’t because of the prejudice of
a lot of newspapers since the. papers
want to put a lot of local boys on
their all state squad. Bell makes a
pretty accurate survey and is rec
ognized by most sports writers as
one of the best al state pickers in
the state.
Bell announced Freeman’s honor
J - . - '
in *a letter to Coach Wilmot Shealy seen Hamptoa in action.
(The list "will be pubished later), j High School Prep* For Greenwood
In the letter Bell-also stated that lut The ciimon high Red Devils began
realized that Clinton had an out-#!p re ppi n g f 0r encounter be-’
standing squad although it was great-: fore they hang up their uniforms to
ly underrated, said that Clinton . take the m^^erm exams. This last
i had one of the best teams in the
! state and that he realized if others
j didn’t, that the Clinton-Newberry
game was one b£ fhe biggest upsets,
of the year .in high’ school fdotha’.T
of this sTate.
Bell named freeman do his team’,
because of' his outstanding ability
not only as a break away rynner but
; also as a good punter. The run Cur
tis made in the Horse Bowl, in Can\-
den, against the stiffest competition
in the state was the final “clincher”!
( for the Rev. who had. his eye on
| Freemah for the entire season.
Freeman made Bell’s first team ini
| his selection and h'e’s up there with
some of the better advertised backs
of the state, such as Parker’s’ big:
'Blaekey Durham and Georgetown’s!
Sweatt (who is supposed to be one 1
the best all aropnd backs this i
.state has seen in many-“moons”). I
Richard Hampton, CJmton quarter
back, and Eugene , Simmons, guard,,
were also highly considered for pos-!
itions on the team. Hampton’s size
migfit-bave been a strike against him
since the Rev. Bell had only his size
as a consideration smee he hadn't
encounter will; be a battle with
Greenwood.
Clinton will be out for sweet re-'
venge since the Greenwood Emer
alds took a double header from the
Devils in their last encounter. •.
