Within the next half dozen years,
we shall be able to view gupd movies
right in our living rooms, and with

ready been reported that Broadway’s-
box office receipts nose-dive on Mil--

Sports promoters are worried too.
Wrestling, boxing, baseball, and
football enthusiasts are forsaking the
arena and ball field for the homo
video screen. College athletic di
rectors are especialy concerned? In
tercollegiate football is a most ex
pensive sport. Advertisers have
found that with the same-number of
sets, television ads pull four times
the sales of ordinary radio advertise
ments.

Schools and colleges have found
as a result of the comic book, pic-
jture magazines, talking mov(es, and
; the radio that our youth even now
1 can not read comprehendingly. They
have become allergic to the printed
1 page. Our children have also- fobgot-
! ten how to amuse themselves. In-
! stead of developing into active par
ticipants. they are becoming pas
sive bystanders. They are becoming
sluggish and lazy in this matter of
thei’r amusement. This is very k unfor-
tunate.
Television, however, has a trem
endous opportunity to instruct and
, amuse constructively’. Television
might well reestablish the home as
a family meeting place. Video could
become a potent force in helping to
lower, juvenile delinquency and
crime rates; it could become a help
ing hand in lowering divorce rates.
•Television could bring to the home

The grille has been simplified and
made more massive.
Described as “packed with value
and ready to prove it,” the new Ply-

“the greatest car value we have ever

“When we speak of value,”’ Erddins
said, “we mean that we heu^e com

"FASHIONED for every taste
1949 Was Our BIGGEST YEAR
In Rural Telephone Expansion
More farm families in tke South got new tele
phones during 1949 than during any other year‘in
history.
The 57,000 poles we erected to extend rural tele
phone service was a record number, too. So was the
105,000 miles of wire placed in service. Setting these
new records required record expenditures of $26,-
000,000 for new rural facilities for the year.
- - *
Serving the rural areas of the South is one of our
biggest jobs, and we’re making record progress. It’s
good telephone service, too-backed by nearly three-
0 '
quarters of a century’s experience^ plus the team
work of the Bell Telephone Laboratories and the
*
Western Electric Company in developing new meth
ods and equipment to make the service still better.
