Launch Movement
To Give Home To
Walter A. Johnson
^ —
A movt ment was launched the
past week by friends to build a
home in Clinton for Walter A. John-'
>on. athletic director of Presbyter-
»an college, in appreciation of his
55 years of faithful service to th*
institution.
H Grice Hunt of Greenville, made
public a letter addressed to friends
rf Coach Johnson from the spon
soring committee. Dr. S C. Hays
of this city has been designated
treasurer of the funds, to receive
contributions of any denomination
from friends regardless of their col
lege affiliation.
The letter said recently that in
New York J Graham Miller of the
class of 1924 was talking to sev-
* ral P. C. alumni m his law office
Miller played on all of Johnson's
teams when he was in college here.
During the conversation there de-
veloped a discussion of P C.’s fine
athletic teams and Coach Johnson
It was then suggested that in ap
preciation of Johnson's services that
friends build him a home. A com-
nit|ee was formed and several con
tributions made by the group, and
t was decided to place every don
or's name on the wall of the den in
Johnson's future home.
It is requested that contributions
be sent to Treasurer S. C. Hays.
It was also announced that the idea
is being sponsored by friends of
Johnson and is not an official cam
paign of the college.
Coroner's Jury
Holds Elmore In
Betsill Shooting
A coroner's jury in Laurens Fri
day afternoon heard testimony about
the murder of Virgil M. Betsill on
the night of November 2.
J. R. Donnan. resident of the San
dy Springs community, testified to
finding Mr. Betiill's .-blood-soaked
oody lying on the cot in his little
store between 9 and 10 o’clock Sun
day morning. Sheriff Wier testified
that Larry Elmore. Negro, who lived j
several hundred yards from the
store, had confessed to the shooting. 1
A statement was also read from Dr
C. P. Vin.ent, county physician.
After hearing the testimony the
jury returned a verdict that Virgil
M. Betsill came to his death by twoj
gunshot wounds at the hands of
Larry Elmore. Solicitor Hugh Beas- ;
ey questioned the two witnesses in
the inquest conducted by Coroner
Bob Burgess before a small group in
the courthouse.
Elmore is now lodged in the pen
itentiary awaiting trial at the next
term of criminal court.
