Stover, of Greenville, manager of the local Southern Bell Telephone company, has announced the completion of a $40,090 rural development on the Joanna highway out from YVhitmire, which involves nine circuit miles of wire. This is the first rural line to be connected with the YVhitmire exchange, it is announced. Installation of telephones in this area began last week, with 23 installed the first day. The first phone installed and put into service was in the home of P. F. Mauney and was installed by H. H. Belue of Union. In the above picture Mr. Belue is presenting the phone to Mrs. Mauney. Others in the picture are Jim Mabry, rural development representative, of Spartanburg, who worked up this line. YV. M. Colored People Of County To Moke Seal Sale Drive The auxiliary of the Laurens County Tuberculosis association met Monday night at the Sweeney- , Lipscomb Mortuary with President i J. T. W. Mims, presiding. After ap- ' propriate opening exercises, J. D. | Su'eeney, county Seal Sale chairman, j outlined his program for the coming drive as follows: The entire county is divided into two areas, Laurens and Clinton. The Laurens area, with J. D. Sweeney, chairman, includes, Laurens, Gray Court, Ora, Princeton, Waterloo, Owings. Barskdale. Lanford, Watts- ville. The Clinton area, with Ben jamin Thompson, general chairman, includes the following, Clinton, Jo anna, Mountville and Cross Hill. The work in each area with a chairman is broken down as follows: The churches, schools, clubs lodges, and house to house canvass. In addi tion to the above plan for a greater Seal Sale drive the auxiliary for this year has established a speakers bu reau whose duty it is to educate the masses to a more general support of the Seal drive. The bureau is under the supervision of C. A. Rubens, Sr The auxiliary will again this year sponsor the Bond sale. L. M. Wright, chairman angle sale. Alice Taylor, chairman the annual kickoff supper which will be held Nov. 1, at Sanders high school in Laurens at 7:30. The overall supervision of the Seal Sale drive is under the direction of M. J. Phone 423. tfc Laymen of South Carolina Presby tery are engaged in a series of church visitations covering the next several months, as announced at the fall meeting of the presbytery held Tues day at Grace Covenant Presbyterian church, Laurens. Rev. George A. Anderson, of this city, was elected as the new moder ator. Powell A. Fraser, of this city, chair man of the church Program of Pro gress. reports the organization of 12 visitation teams in churches through out the presbytery during the fall, winter and spring. The series is designed to give lay men of the. section a more thorough acquaintance with the church pro gram. And Presbyterian leaders also point out the visitations will give congregations with no posters an op portunity to have services and take part in the program. Visits this fall will aim at awaken ing interest in two important Pres byterian meetings—the Men’s Rally at Presbyterian college on October 18, and the Men’s convention in At lanta November 4-6. Fraser, who also serves on the Presbyterian college faculty, states the visitation teams were organized at a meeting held here September 12.
