Mrs. Coker Honored
Mrs. Geneva Coker was given a
dinner Sunday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. J. L. Smith in Coronaca.
Members of the immediate family
were present. Out of town guests
included Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bauk-
night, Mr. and Mrs. James Crain.
Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Wallenzine.
Mrs. Coker was remembered with
many gifts.
Fellowship Supper at Bailey
Memorial Methodist Church
Bailey Memorial Methodist church
is looking forward with great antici
pation to the occasion of the Fellow
ship supper >yhich will be next Sat-
urray evening at 7 o'clock. Dinner
will be, served at the time stated
above, and from what is being over
heard by different ones it is really
going to be bountiful and palatable.
Thi;; will be in the basement of
the church and at the close of the
dinner all will ascend to the audi-
toriiim where a fine program will

members of the faculty of the Acade
my Street school.
Among The Sick
Friends of Mrs. Hattie Smith are
glad to know she is improving at
her home from an illness.
Mrs. 1 Clyde Bigbee is ill at her
home on Main street.
Mrs. Roy Sisk is recuperating at
her home after being a patient at
Hays hospital.
Miss Wilma Dunaway is recuperat
ing after a tonsilectomy at Hays hos
pital last Saturday.
Mrs. Ovell Woody is improving
after being ill with flu several days.
Friends of F. B. Burns are sorry
to learn he is a patient in the Ander
son hospital.
Charlie Lowery is a patient at the
Veteran’s hospital in Columbia.

Mm. Brizil Honored
On Tuesday evening Mrs. Edgar
Brizil was given a surprise party at
the home of her mother, Mrs. C. W.
Windsor.
A large number of friends gathered
for the occasion to bid Mrs. Brizil
farewell, as she is leaving to join
her husband. Sgt. Brizil, who is sta
tioned at Fort Ord, Calif.
The hostess, assisted by Mrs.
Charles mdsor. Mrs. Carl Windsor
and Mrs. Guy Curry, served refresh
ments.
Junior Missioitarr Society Organized
On last Wednesday afternoon Mrs.
Murray Adams invited the girls of
junior and intermediate ages to her
home for the purpose of discussing
j the possibility of organizing a Junior
Missionary Society at Bailey Mem-
; orial Methodist church.
After the purpose of the meeting
had been explained by Mrs. Adams
1 the girls became very interested
and expressed a desire to see such
an organization effected.
Consequently, with Mrs. Adams
| presiding, the following officers were
’ unanimously elected:
J Linda Dunaway—^President.
Corrie Dunaway—Treasurer.
Pat Cunningham—Secretary
Mrs. Murray Adams—Sponsor.
Sybil McCoy—Assistant sponsor.
The meetings will be held week
ly on Wednesday afternoon in the
ditferent homes of the young people.
This organization will seek to de
velop within the minds of fthe girls
’ a love for the cause of missions, a
determination to promote the work
of missions, as well as to give them
another opportunity for wholesome
Christian fellowship, which will in
turn have a tendency to build young
people’s organizations in the church
at large. > ’
New Unemployment
Claims Show
Substantial Gain

i Columbia. Sept. 14.—The S. C.
Employment Security Commission
has just issued a report revealing
that the number of new unemploy
ment compensation claims made dur
ing July rose 44 per cent above the
figure for the preceeding month. In
itial claims totalled 19,399 during
July, a 27 per cent gain over June.
Additional claims showed a five per
cent increase.
Laurens county is listed as being
' one of the twelve counties in South
Carolina to havve between 4,500 and
8,999 workers covered by the em-
' ployment security commission. Sev-
| en counties are in the highest cate
gory, having between 13,000 and 47,-
999 covered workers per county, and
I fifteen counties are in the lowest
I' category, having between 400 and
1,699 workers.
The rate of insured unemployment
in South Carolina during July ivas
6.9 per cent. The insured unemploy-
\ m^nt rate for the state for the; month
of June was 6.8 per cent, while the
rate for July, 1948, was only 2.3 per
cent.
