Sears Roebuck Spent Record Total For '48 Newspaper Ads Chicago—The newspapers’ biggest retail advertiser, Sears, Roebuck and Company, spent a recordbreaking to tal for newspaper ads last year, Ed itor and Publisher, newspaper trade publication, announced. Sears placed $24,571,024 in news paper advertising last year, an in crease of 28 per cent over the prev ious all-time high of $19,134,400 in 1947. General Motors corporation was the biggest in the field of na tional advertising in newspapers, the paper said, with $15,282,675. Last year’s Sears expenditure re presented an estimated 232,858,000 lines of newspaper space, a 17 per cent increase in lineage over 1947. Editor and Publisher said. Sears reported its advertising dol lars went into 1,133 dailies and week- lids in 47 states where it has retail stores—none in Wyoming. The com pany’s total retail ad budget last year was $28,778,000, yielding to newspa pers, 85.4 cents of every dollar spent.
