Nitrogen For Annual Grazing
Laurens County has been alloted
100 tons of T.V.A. nitrogen (testing
33 percent) by the Tennessee Valley
Authorities through the State Farm

tion to be used on demonstration^
conducted by farmers on this fall
winter graining. The regulations state
that the nitrogen is to be used for no
other crops. , ^
The cost will be $68.40 per ton de

Farmers wishing to apply for this
nitrogen may do at the county agent’s
office by the 15th of September. No
nitrogen may do so at the county
agent’s office by September 15th. No
nitrogen will be ordered for any
person except for those who deposit
cash or check at time of filing appli
cation.
All applications for nitrogen will
be handled by the sub-committee of
the Laurens Agricultural Commit

money.
Last year the committee alloted
140 tons of T.V_A. and 40 tons of
A.N.L. nitrogen to farmers for an
nual grazing and permanent pasture.
There is no profit made by handling
the nitrogen through the agricultural
committee.
Defoliate Cotton
Many farmers are asking about
defoliating cotton to prevent lower
cotton bolls on the stalks from rot-
tening and to speed up opening. De
foliating when used right is profit
able. but if used wrong is coetly to
the farmer as the leaves are killed
as if a killing frost came.
Cyanamid dust should not be ap
plied to cotton until the bolls of cot
ton from which cotton is to be har
vested is at least *5 to 30 days old.
If applied before that period the bolls
will give low percent turnout and
be cracked.
W. C. Netties and L. M. Sparks.
Jr., Extension Entomologists, of
Clemson College Extension Service,
recommend 20 to 25 pounds of Cya
namid applied to cotton leaves while
damp. The fertilizer grade of Cyan
amid or the Aero dusting Cyanamid
gives practically the same results.
The fertilizer grade of Cyanamid is
no doubt cheaper in price than the
Aero dusting Cyanamid, but there is
no doubt, difference in the dusting
quality or easiness to distribute
Those who expect to use Cyanamid
to detoliate should check this matter
with the dealer as to the fertilizer
grade passing through the dusttng
machine.
Indications are that many farm
ers will defoliate their cotton this
year due to rank growth, and it is
hoped the material will not be ap
plied too early and damage the cost
ly cotton group.
Veterinarian Now Located
Dr. William D. Mayfield, veterin
arian, has moved to Laurens and
lives in the old Mack T. Roper house,
918 West Main Street, across from
the West End Grocery Store and
the Simpson Florist. Dr. Mayfield
has not been able to get a telephone
but hopes that one will be installed
at once as promised by the local
telephone office. He plans to open
an otfice in the city as soon as suit
able place is located. Dr. Mayfield
states that he is well pleased with
the practice he is getting so far, de
spite the fact that he has no tele
phone for people to call him.
