To begin with, I want to say that
if I had a dozen votes. I’d cast every
one of them against the government’s
taking any steps toward regimenting
of public health. Of all unshackled
men, in thought and action, I think
the doctor should be the freest. Of
all unrestricted choices of free men,
I think the choice of physician should
be the foremost. I think that one of
the gravest injuries the government
of the United States could do its citi
zens would be to wrap their doctor
up in red tape of politics and gov
ernment regulation.
Of all professions that have made
progress n the development of the
effectiveness of their service to hu
manity, their knowledge, their skill
and their certainty, the medical pro-!
fession, it seems to me, is far in the
lead.
Without government interference,
the medical profession has, through
its diligence or research and appli
cation, blocked out many dreaded I
diseases and extended the span of!
human life.
This has been done by a profes
sion of men, unshackled and unreg
imented. I think they should stay
that way.
But, my friend, the doctor, if there!
is any danger of your being regi
mented. who is responsible for the
thought?
Have you deviated considerably
from the philosophy of your for
bears? Instead of being the servant
of the people and responsible for
their health needs, have you begun
to look upon them as belonging to
you — clients rather than patients?
Has the matter of money affected
your total absorption in the health
and cure of any and everyone? Is it
true that your code of ethics is so set
i up in your favor that even a quack
i is hard to run down and unlicensed
Is it true that members of boards of
: regents of medical colleges have been
admonished by you to limit the
number of young men entering these
institutions because there are too

when a man of ordinary appearance

of the night and implores you to go

dying, that you ask, before you con
sent to go, if he has any money or
if there is any insurance on the pa

I do not know that any of these
