Special to The Chronicle.
Columbia. July 6—The Bureau of
Public Administration of the Uni-
. versity of South Carolina has just
issued a booklet on Public Reci ca
tion in South Carolina Municipali
ties,” by Christian L. Larsen and Ro
bert H. Stoudemire. The study is
based on data gathered during the
period from September, 1947. to
June 1948, and will be re-printed la
ter in a volume on South Carolina
municipal government and adminis
tration.
The booklet drew the conclusion
that in South Carolina municipali
ties of more than 10,000 population
the matter of public recreation is re
ceiving "a fair degree of attention,’
while in municipalities of less than
10,000 "it is considered of minor im
portance.'’ Only 22 municipalities in
the state employ personnel specific
ally assigned to public recreation
duties. The municipalities of the
state spend over one-naif million dol
lars annually on public recreation,
of which 81 per cent is spent by the
ten municipalities of more than 10,-
00 population.
The booklet lists Clinton as spend
ing approximately $5,498 for public
recreation during the 1946-47 fiscal
year, and Laurens as spending ap
proximately $5,260 of the $573,213
spent in South Carolina. In Clinton,
municipal public recreation is ad
ministered by a recreation commis
sion. and in Laurens by city council,
according to the report.
