I,ong Branch Club Hall and Mrs. Adeline Long, who have really been active and kept us the same during the two years that they have been with us in the county. • Although every lady of our club has done excellent work and made was spent on aid to the blind, $44,805 for aid to dependent children, and the remaining $16,892 on general as sistance. A total of $1,277,001 was spent on assistance in the state during the vast improvements in their homes j month of April, the report shows, and surroundings, we would like to make especial mention of Mrs. Joe Poole, who was selected as the "Who’s Who” of the club. Mrs. Poole’s residence which was erected in the 18th century, perhaps part logs, nevertheless has been com pletely renovated with a nice bath with $44,062 of the total being spent in Laurens county. Another member of our club whom I wish to mention is Mrs. Marian Courtney of the Sandy Springs com munity. Mrs. Courtney has been a member of the club for the past year. During this time she has had con structed a very attractive, unique, new cement block house on the Lau rens-Cross Anchor road. Even though this home is not quite com pleted, the unfinished part has been left so additions may be made to make the home more accommodat ing and attractive. This home has electrical appli ance^. running water and all con veniences needed to help make this housewife's daily life very happy. Columbia, June 14.—The tax plac ed on gasoline by the state of South Carolina will continue at the rate of six cents per gallon during the coming fiscal year, as a proposal to increase the tax by one cent was not approved this year by the general i assembly. At present, five cents of the tax is retained by the state high way department, and the remaining one cent on each gallon is distrib uted monthly among the counties of the state on the basis of the number .of motor vehicle licenses sold in each county. The proposed one cent in crease would have been earmarked for the construction of rural roads , in the state. • The tax distribution made to the counties during May totalled $344,- 494, according to State Treasurer Jeff D. Bates. Laurens county re ceived an allotment of $6,813, over $1,000 more than the distribution re ceived by the county in May a year ago. In May of 1938 Laurens county was allotted $5,729 from a total dis tribution to the counties amounting to $300,964. Columbia, June 14.—According to a, report on rural electric line miles contained in the 1948 year book of the South Carolina department of agriculture, which yvas issued this spring to members of the general as sembly, Laurens county had a total of 797 miles of rural lines last year. Laurens county had a total of 4,273 rural customers last year, while the average number of customers per mile of line was 5.36. The report stated that the average number of rural customers per'1,000 of popula tion was 135 last year, with the av- eiage number of rural customers per , square mile of rural area in the | county eitimated as six. There are 700 square miles of ru ral area and a rural population of 31,587 in Laurens county, according i to the year book. The county has a rural population of 45.1 persons per square mile of the county’s area. South Carolina has 27,459 miles of rura Hines, 152,275 rural custom ers, a rural population of 1,433,693, and a rural area of 30,438 square miles. The year book states that ”in a very few years, it is expected that every household in South Carolina that desires electric service will be able to obtain such service from one of the organizations furnishing elec tric service within the state.’” THE COUNTRY MARKET PHONE 9H ' .T D. Columbia, June 8. — During the first ten months of the 1948-49 fiscal year, the South Carolina Department of Public Welfare has spent a total of $11,132,259 on welfare assistance in the counties of the state, accord ing to a report of Arthur B. Rivers, department director.
