During this time she has had con

State Gas Tax
Special to The Chronicle.
Columbia, June 14.—The tax plac
ed on gasoline by the state of South
Carolina will continue at the rate
of six cents per gallon during the
coming fiscal year, as a proposal to
increase the tax by one cent was not
approved this year by the general i
assembly. At present, five cents of
the tax is retained by the state high
way department, and the remaining
one cent on each gallon is distrib
uted monthly among the counties of
the state on the basis of the number
.of motor vehicle licenses sold in each
county. The proposed one cent in
crease would have been earmarked
for the construction of rural roads
, in the state. •
The tax distribution made to the
counties during May totalled $344,-
494, according to State Treasurer
Jeff D. Bates. Laurens county re
ceived an allotment of $6,813, over
$1,000 more than the distribution re
ceived by the county in May a year
ago. In May of 1938 Laurens county
was allotted $5,729 from a total dis
tribution to the counties amounting
to $300,964.
