of that pest may now be expected

look-out and have 10 percent DDT
ready.
The overwintered boll weevils at
Clemson’s Pee Dee Station at Flor

the 12 years they have kept such

Mildew showed up on cabbage in
Lexington for the first time.
Blue mold on tobacca was very ’

Mildew showed up on wheat so

So its a fight to the finish this year
against insects and plant diseases
It seems certain that we will have
more of them than usual. But we
also have more effective remedies
than we used to have. So, if we keep
a close watch and apply remedies
before it is too late, maybe we can
e-cape with minor damages. The
troubles and their remedies are too
numerous to mention here. Ask your
county agent. Mr. Nettles will try to
keep him informed.
One must admire the persistence
>t a wild onion, if nothing else about
it. 1 saw them growing in heavy
kudzu, where nothing else will. But
they are wise. They came up ahead
of the kudzu and made their growth
before the strangulation took place.
And they will come back when the
season is right.
I was inspired by Dr. Daniels’
beautiful interpretation of some of
Shakespeare's matchless writing
when I was at Clemson. So 1 de
cided to write an ode for Joe Hunt-!
er, who was editor of the college
magazine, The Chronicle.
On a moonlit night, I gazed out
of the window, waiting for the
spirit to move me. I started out like
this, “As the silent silvery Seneca
slowly sides in her seaward solitude
searching for small streamlets”.
And there I got stuck and stayed. I
had nothing in mind but the ether-
ial grandeur of words, and I was
just trying to scale the heights
with them.
Although my phrase is meaning
less, I still think it sounds right
good.

I can remember when we got" our

about 1900, when I was approaching
