The tact is this show seems to
have been endowed with that thing
often described as a labor of love,
for not only did Kelly and Dunenl
write the story, they also staged the
10 musical numbers which range
•from excellent to a measly good On
the story side, which is not veiy
important, is a situation which finds
the ball team passing to the control
of Miss Williams, who must have
been a nice boss to take orders
from. Kelly is the wise guy, Sin
atra the muscle-less one, Munshin
the comedy end of the pennant-win
ning nine, Miss Garrett who wants
to mother Sinatra—and more, and
Arnold the shady character who
almost wrecks the team.
What happens in the plot—and it
isn't much—becomes less essential
than how it is made to happen. The
arm of coincidence was never long
er. # but it might hi' said also that not
often has it been employed with
such uncommon verve, bounce, and
good humor. This attraction con
sequently has a lilt and movement
which practically swamp into insig
nificance its narrative contrivances.
The theme song from which the
film draws title is the piece of Arn-
Laurens, S. C., March 28—
At a called meeting held Mon
day night, the City Council voted
to rescind and repeal its former
order for annexation to the city of
two areas which voted January 6
to come into the city.
The motion to rescind was made
by Alderman Watts, seconded by
Alderman Stoddard.
Action of the council folldwed a
notice given in the regular month
ly meeting March 7 by O. L Long. I
attorney for residents in the an
nexed area, that the annexation
would be protested in the courts.
Mayor W. T Bolt, in a statement
yesterday, said that City Attorney
H S. Blackwell had advised the
council that the time had expired
for filing a protest on the election
under the status of 1946 but that
the election was not conducted in
acoordamo with the new procedure'
as set fo-th in a law passed in 1948,
the latter law nut having been pub
lished at the time the election was
held.
The mayor said that even though
it appeared that the legality of the

ONE OF “CAROLINA’S FINEST”
ericana written years ago by Jack
Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer. It
occurs and re-occurs throughout the
footage but always with a happy
faculty of belonging, pr'Cbably be
cause it is not overplayed. Forty-
years old is “The Hat My Father
Wore on St. Patrick's Day" by Sch
wartz and Jerome. It is the basis
[for a perfectly swell song-and-dance
number in which Kelly is the prin
cipal. "O’Brien to Ryan to Gold-
iberg," this cne by Betty Comden.
; Adolph Green and Roger Edens and
' performed by Sinatra, Kelly and
Munshin cannot help but click,
while in the. hit category is “It’s
[Fate, Baby, It's Fate,” in which the
! Miss Garrett, as the femme fatale,
pursues Sinatra. This incidentally,
is the number in which Miss Gar
rett moves into her own on the
screen, where she’ll stay and en
hance her stature.
• At this point, the general im
pression ought to be that "Take Me
Out to the Ball Game” is quite a
show. Impression is correct. It's
a bearcat of a show with its period
dress, its effervescence and its all-
around expertness. Technicolor is a
decided asset.
