all the horrors of a business depres
sion?"
When this disquieting thought was
voiced, the decline in the London
market had barely begun. Since then
every sector of the market except
government issues has been in .an
uninterrupted slide. In the New
York stock exchange prices on the
average have see-sawed in the past
two weeks after declining to the
lowest level in about a year at the
end of February. .
Declines in Wall Street brought
sympathetic tumbles here. British
financiers and government officials
alike have long said that Britain!
could hardly avoid the effects of an
other U. S. depression.
But. in addition, England is going
through the same post-war pains
that are now gripping the U. S. ec
onomy.
Some industries have run into the
shrinking markets. Inventories are
catching up with long depletions.
Supply is now outstripping demand
in some significant sectors of the
British economy.
Retail supplies of food, liquor and
clothing have stacked up enough so
that business has returned to the pre- 1
war pattern of seasonal booms and
slumps. Retail sales fell 25 per cent
January from December.

Program Helps
Corn Production
Clemson, March 22. — A 5-point
program recommended by the Clem- £
son college extension service is help
ing state farmers increase corn pro
duction.
The program emphasizes thorough
seedbed preparation, more plants per
acre, adapted and certified hybrids,,
more liberal fertilization and shal
low cultivation.
"Only three hybrids are recom
mended by Clemson for 1949,’’ H. A.

They are N. C. 27, a yellow hybrid
suited to the entire state; Dixie. 17,
a white hybrid outyielding all oth
ers but subject to weevil damage;
and Dixie 18, a new yellow hybrid
that resists weevil damage and stands
up well. Dixie 18 seed is very scarce,
however, Woodle added.
County farm agents throughout the
state are conducting variety demon
strations this year. They will show
how the new hytorids compare with
the best open-pollinated varieties.
