>ou. e is the ft...idation of
i ind istry. In 1946 F uth C..ro-
ia’s v idhfe resourtes were in de-
; leted cjndit.m; yet wildlife was a,
| >ur b .lion dollar industry in the
I nation that year. According to :ig-
i ires giving the total retail sale of
.her industries lor the same-yrar,
shing and hunting ranked above
idling stations, above drilg stores and
. aove retail liquor and jewlry c m-
oined.
South Carolina could rank high
among states capitalizing on that in-
ustry. Yet {Laiftlcally all of the
cnambers of commerce throughout
. ie state are peacefully dozing waile
i handful of sportsmen fight des-
eratcly to save tne expiring- w.ld-
. fe resources.
The game and fish commission bill
was passed by the S. C. house of rep-
resentat.ves on March 2. That bill is
designed to divorce politics from
game administration. Passage of the
bill will not be a "cure all’’ for wild-
life; but it will heal many ills.
In addition to eliminating political,
^dmmistraNon it will require that
all of the sportsmen’s dollars (license
.ees) and other revenues derived
from game and fish be spent either
protecting or developing wildlife. At
present only 55 per cent of license
tees are retained by the game and
ush department. The other 45 goes to
oiher causes, which in no way help
g..me or fish.
The fate ot wildlife in South Caro
lina is now hanging in the balance.
It has required years of effort on >
part of sportsmen to obtain a chance
for improvement.
It is now up to you. Your support
will mean much. Your support alone
may be the little extra bit that can
pass the bill.
The most important thing you can
do at the present time to support the
commission bill is to write to your
county senator and representatives.
Ask them to work for speedy passage
o! the bill. And don't delay, because
i: will deleat a just cause.
