As it-is, the 500-acre estate is one
of America’s swankiest historic

ernment a cent. Millions of people,
including all presidents, have visited
Mount Verbon in the past 80 years.
The estate was placed on the
market in the 1850s for $200,000. The
United States government turned it
down. So did the state of Virginia.
Miss Ann Pamela Cunningham ot
South Carolina thought that was all
wrong. She was determined to save
the home for posterity. She organ-

The grounds are beautifully pre
served, even to the kitchen garden.
The furniture is amazingly luxur
ious, comfortable, cozy.
Charles C. Wall, superintendent
for the past 18 years, lives on the
estate. He says it takes 75 perma- i
nent employees including 16 guards]
(more on big days) to keep Mount]
j Vernon in top shape,
j “We get a mass audience,’’ he says, !
[ “but it’s amazing how well-behaved,
and reverent most of the people are. j
There is little or no attempt to steal. I
“We try to emphasize the signifi- 1
cant things, but it’s . the down to
earth subjects that interest many.
How Washington lived, what kind of,
lights they had, the heat, the food. ;

“Our guards are well-trained.
Some have been here 35 years or
more. And although few people!
try to steal, an amusing thing hap
pened not long ago. A college girl
stole one of the “no smoking’ signs.
Large as it was, she managed to
smuggle it by every guard in the
place. The dean of women at he»
college found it, and we got it back.

Qualities Beyond
All Boundary of Price
ihe combined qualities in today’s Dodge car
are tar beyond all limits of price, since price will not buy
them elsewhere. You get size and weight, power and speed,
style and trim, with excellent appointments. But with and
»
beyond all these you get a smoothness of performance
not known before. This is a big new fact in automobile
affairs which belongs to Dodge, and which should also
belong to you. ——
