Laurens, Nov. 4.—A $15,000 verdict
was awarded J. Ralph Arnold, ancil

Shows Monthly Increase

Chronicle.)—Gasoline tax allotments

leased this week by Jeff Bates, state
treasurer. In October of last-year,
Caurens county received $5,167 in
gasoline tax ano;mments, while this
October it received $5,396.
An increase was not only notice- j
able in Laurens county but in the!

total amount of the tax distributed;

The Rev. J. W. Spillers, recently
called to the pastorate of Calvary
Baptist church of this city, preached.

here from the Gossett Memorial Bap-;
tist church at Williamston.
Mr. and Mrs. Spillers and four
children moved here Monday and are
now occupying the church parsonage.
He was educated at Furman and
Clemson and has been in the pastor
ate for 17 years. He taught School
before entering the ministry and has
been serving as secretary of the ex
ecutive committee of the Saluda Bap'-
tist association.

NEW COMEDY
V. F. W. Presents “Cornzapoppin” At
Joanna School Auditorium
November 7-8.
An enthusiastic and talented cast
is at work daily on the forthcoming
production of “Cornzapoppin,” the
elaborate musical show which the
Goldville chapter of Veterans of For
eign Wars will sponsor Friday and
Saturday, November 7 and 8, at 8
pun. as a benefit for a war memorial,
at the Joanna school auditorium.
“Cornzapoppin” is under the direc
tion of Edith Hampton Koontz, rep
resenting the Empire Producing com
pany, Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Koontz
has had considerable experience in
this type of work, also special train
ing for “Cornzapoppin,” and in an
interview stated that she was
greatly pleased with the cast and the
cooperation of the organization, and
anticipates one of the finest shows
that she has ever directed.
The show opens with the farmer
ettes singing “1 Like Mountain Mu
sic.” Cousin Lniney Pearl, played by
Lavinia Cooley, is always busy col
lecting rocks and mountain music.
This song will go right down in her)
book. Mary Simpson plays the part
of Elviry Judkins, who “rules the
roost” in the Judkins household. Her
husband, Henry, played by Verlyn
Davenport, is widely known. He is
always having new ideas and finan
cial failures. Elviry has her heart set
on daughter Sue, played by Mary
Francis, marrying Squire Hicks,
played by James Fulmer, who is the
town sheriff and lawyer combined.
Sue, however, is much more inter
ested in the young man who lives
down the road. Roy Hawkins plays
the part of Bob Sandrock. Sue has a
brother Elmer, Squat Brock, who does
not like girls, but does enjoy playing
marbles. Mazie Mae, the girl from
Frog Patch, thinks Elmer is wonder
ful.
The Judkins family live in the
Skunlc Crik community, and Maw is
the treasurer of the Skunk Crik
Community club. For three days the
water from Skunk Crik has smelled
like lilac perfume. Juanita Daven
port plays the part of Aunt Bessie,
and she thinks Perfume from Skunk
Crik is silly. And Aunt Bessie wor
ried when her pet bear cub, Buster,
disappears. Miss Twitty, played by
Noami Sample, is also worried. Shei
can’t make any headway with "that!
man” Squire TTicks. ^
But all’s well that ends well, and;
“Cornzapoppin” has a happy ending.
According to advance reports from
towns that have staged the show,
‘Cornzapoppin” is a- riot of comedy
and entertainment, and it promises
to be just that in Goldville.
You will enjoy this three-act com
edy-drama, the V. F. W. will greatly
appreciate your patronage, as the
profits will be used directly for the
memorial project being planned in
the Goldville community.
Tiny Tots Popularity Contest
A tiny tots popularity contest will
be held in conjunction with the pro
duction, “Cornzapoppin,” at one cent
a vole. Headquarters for voting are
at Joanna Mercantile Co., Goldville.
County Ginnings
Show Big Drop
Cotton ginnings in Laurens county
are considerably lower than last
year according to data collected by
the bureau of the census of the De
partment of Commerce.
» The report of ginnings up to the
first of this month showed 1,946 bales
as compared with 3,352 on the cor-i
responding date last year. ;
