Today’s lesson records the division
of the Hdbrew kingdom through the
stupidity of Rehoboftm and the am
bition of Jeroboam. For several
centuries -the kingdom of the north
ern tribes and the kingdom of Judah
waged wars against each other,
while neither was able to make a
strong stand against other nations.
At length the people of Samarta
were deported and absorbed by the!
Assyrians and they disappeared
from history as the Lost Tribes of
Israel.
Judah, with kings of the house of'
David, survived longer—until its 1
people were carried away by Neb-j
uchadnezzar. They were allowed byj
the Persians to return to their na
tive land. And for a time they had
some measure of independence un
der the Maccabees.
Rehoboam was a pampered prod
uct of Solomon’s court. He lost the
young men as foolish as himself and
refusing the j advice i f old counsel
lors, to reject, the petition of his peo
ple for higher taxes.
Jeroboam was a “.self-made” man’’
who took advantage of the northern
tribes’ revolt to gain a kingdom for
himself. He and Rehoboam were
both indifferent to real religion—•
there is no evidence that either of
them ever sought guidance of God.
