L. ‘
To the Voters of Laurens County:
A( Home or Abroad, in WRr Industries,
or in the Armed Services:
Having announced my candidacy for re-election to the office of
Sheriff of Laurens County, I deem It not only proper, but my duty
to the public, that I render a brief account of my record as a citi
zen and as an offioer.
My entire family and I are natives of Laurens County. During
the critical days of World War I, I served the armed forces of
our country for 22 months, 11 months of the time overseas. My
only son is now serving in the air forces over Italy and Germany.
Soon after my discharge at the conclusion of the war in 1918,
I became a law enforcement officer in the city of Clinton where I
served for 12 consecutive years. You then elected me as Sheriff
of our county, in which office I have continued to serve you in a
fair, honest, and diligent manner for the past 8 years.
I have always made an earnest effort to perform my duties
faithfully, efficiently, and decently toward ALL people, seeking
the TRUTH about all complaints and conditions coming to my
attention. I have tried to present fairly and truthfully all evidence
discovered: showing either the guilt or the Innocence of the ac
cused; neither favoring the high nor oppressing those in low and
humble circumstances.
I have endeavored to inspire the youth of our county to noble
aims, encouraging them to abstain from the use of intoxicants, aim
not to associate with idle, dissolute and corrupt persons; thereby
preventing delinquency among them. I highly advocated the Pro
bation Law recently passed by our state, whereby young men or
first offenders are placed on probation and in many cases become
useful citizens. I shall never lose faith In the, youth of our county
and shall always endeavor to cooperate with the churches and civic
organizations In the work of youth welfare.
During my term of office I have apprehended and brought back
to this county from other states 30 persons who were escaped con-
victs or were charged with violation of the law. In the majority
of these .cases, the apprehension was effected by identification of g
finger prints, a system which I have put into operation since
assuming this office.
All civil papers lodged In my office are served promptly and
courteously. ,
I again recommend to our delegation the need for a police radio
system in our ^tate. This system will do much to discourage criine
and also aid in the quick apprehension of violators.
During the present emergency, my office force and I deem it
not only a duty but indeed a privilege to be able to offer our
with relatives.

ft assistance In any available opportunity of service toward the pro-
ft motion of the war effort in our county! We are ready at all times
ft to carry messages to the families of those in the armed services,
ft and to aid in establishing communications between them.
Due to the fact that we have had fewer prisoners since the
beginning of the war, I have, for the past 16 months, taken over
the responsibility of Jailor, thereby releasing this man for service
In Defense work, and at the same time, saving the county the
expense of an extra officer. The jail is kept sanitary and the pris
oners are treated hurbanely.
Only by consUnt vigilance and by active cooperation of my
deputies and all law’ enforcement officers of the county am I able
to make you so good a report. Upon my record and under present
existing conditions, I feel that I should be continued In this office
that you may have the benefit of my knowledge of the county and
its people, and of my previous experience In the work.
I consider it an honor and a privilege to serve the people of
my County as Sheriff, and I heartily solicit your support and your
vote*
Respectfully submitted.
