Report Shortage In Laurens Bank Young Woman Employe Out On Bond Facing Alleged $80,000 Short age In Accounts. Miss Bernice Shell Dula, bookkeep er of the Palmetto Bank of Laurens, was arrested last Thursday by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investiga tion at her home in Laurens in con nection with a shortage at the bank and was released on bond of $5,000 until the October term Of federal court in Greenville. L. G. Balle, president of the bank, said the shortage was “in the neigh borhood of $80,000” and that Miss Dula was “fully bonded” in an amount greater than $80,000. The young woman had been an employe of the bank fdr 23 years. After her arrest. Miss Dula was carried before United States Commis sioner Harry L. Hinson in Greenville for a hearing. She asserted that she did not know where the missng funds are now, although she did not impli cate anyone else, Commissiener Hin son said. Her bond was signed by Miss Martha Dula, her sister, Mrs. Blanche Shell and E. M. Shelh all of Laurens. The warrant charged her with making unauthorized withdraw als, withholding deposits and other- wise converting to her own use, or to the use of others, certain monies, Announcement!
