Potsy Derrick, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. W. O. Derrick, celebrated
her fourth birthday With a party Sat
urday afternoon at her home.
Twenty-five little boys and girls
were invited for an afternoon of
games and each was given an attrac
tive favor of the party. Later in the
afternoon Mrs. Derrick served the
guests ice cream^and cake.

Pretbyforion Bible Class
Enjoys Picnic Thursday
On Thursday afternoon at five
o’clock the Berea Bible darn of the
First Presbyterian church enjoyed a
picnic on the lawn of Mrs. Frank
Kellers’ home. On this occasion the
ladies had as their guests Hugh Hol
man, teacher of the class, and the
matrons of Thorn well orphanage.
Sandwiches, punch, cookies and
other picnic dainties were served in
the attractive garden of the hostess’

Methodist Society Hears
Program On Africa
A joint meeting of the circles and
Woman’s Society of Christian Ser
vice of Broad Street Methodist
church was held on Monday after
noon.
The circles met separately for a
business session, after which they
convened in the main auditorium of
thf church' to hear a program on
Africa. Prayer was offered by Mrs.
S. C. Dunlap, and Mrs. J. V. Edwards
read an appropriate meditation. Mrs.
John O. Barden gave a tirik on “Re
freshing Christians” and discussed
mission work in Africa, giving a
number of instances why mission
aries have gone to that continent
The program closed with prayer by
Mrs. John H. West.

The July meeting of the Woman’s
Missionary society of St John’s Lu
theran church was held on Monday
afternoon at the church with the
newly elected president Mrs. Turner
Martin, of Laurens, presiding.
The secretary, Mrs. R. N. Black-
welder, led an interesting program
on “Home Missions,” 'with Mrs. R.
W. .Boland, Mrs. J. H. Baxter and
Mrs. Wyman Shealy giving articles.

adorned the buffet and dining table.
Continuing a series of studies on
women of the Bible, Mrs. J. H. Koh
ler sketched the life and character
of Rebecca, wife of Isaac. Topic of
the program for the evening was
“Our Stake In Africa,” which was
interestingly discussed by Mrs. John
Q. Barden, formerly a missionary to
the Belgian Congo. The devotional,
given by Mrs. J. B: Arnold, followed
the chosen subject.
At the conclusion of the program
a social hour was enjoyed by the|
twenty members attending and the
hostesses served a salad and sweet
course with lemonade.

Mrs. Weathers is the former Miss

Mrs. Helen G. Mellette has been
elected to the office of Laurens coun
ty attendance teacher for the cur
rent school year, it is announced by
the board of education." She was
named to succeed Mrs. H. O. Walker,
who resigned because of impaired
health, it is announced. \
Mrs. Mellette has been a teacher’
in the Laurens public schools for a'
number of years. She will enter upon
her new work after returning from
Boone, N. C., where she is attending
summer school at Appalachian insti
tute. - x
