Piephoff, Mrs. Varina Bet- sill, Mrs. Lucy Gambill, Mrs. Lorene Lloyd, Walter Beeman, Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Lynn, Mrs. C. A. McFad- den and Mrs. Phil Price. U.D.C. Memorial Service For Mrs. D. J. Woods The local chapter, United Daugh ters of the Confederacy, met on Fri day afternoon at the home of Mrs. A. E. McIntosh with seventeen mem bers present. Assistant hostesses were Mrs. A. M. Copeland, Mrs. Bessie E. Godfrey and Mrs. C. Bynum Betts. Miss Mary Johnson had charge of a memorial service to Mrs. Julia Fer guson Woods, historian at the time of her death, and who had long been a member of the chapter, serving in several offices. Miss Johnson read a beautiful tribute and poem to the memory of Mrs. Woods. After the meeting a spray of flowers was plac ed on the grave. At the conclusion of the business Marion Jones of Greenville, on Sat urday, February 28, 1942. The cere mony was performed at the home of Reverend Harold E. Cunningham in SimpsonviUe. Mrs. Jones is a graduate of Thorn- well Orphanage! high school, and at tended Presbyterian college. Mr. Jones, the son of L. E. Jones of Greenville, is a graduate of the Slater high school at Salter, and at tended the University of South Caro lina. Lutheran Society Has Mission Program The Missionary society of St John's Lutheran church met on Monday af ternoon at the church, with members of this city and Laurens attending. Reports on the mission study book let, “Christian Roots of Democracy in America," were heard. Mrs. A. J. Merchant, mission study leader, gave an interesting discussion of the topic, with reports on chapters of the book given by Mrs. R. W. Boland, Mrs. O. C. Woodruff and Mrs. J. T. Mar tin of Laurens. Victory Book Campaign ‘ Lasts Three Months Announcement has been made by the county chairman, Miss Beaufort B. Copeland, that the campaign for “victory" books wiU be extended qpe month. The campaign, sponsored by the American Library association, the American Red Cross and the United Service Organization, to col lect bodes for educational purposes at military centers, began in Febru ary and wiU last through ApriL The books are collected at Clinton high school library and those having text bodes, certain types of novels and adventure stories, technical and scientific books which they wish to contribute are asked to leave them at the library. : - Methodist Circle Meets With Mrs. Workman The Sara Glenn circle of Broad Street Methodist church Woman’s Society of Christian Service met on Monday evening at the home of Mrs. A. C. Workman. Mrs. Clyde S. Lankford gave an enlightening discussion on the topic, '“Health In India,” from the study booklet. An interesting Bible study on “Moses” was given by Mrs. J. H. Kohler. During a business session, names of boys in military service were given members, who will re member them in some way. A social hour was enjoyed and Mrs. Workman, with the assistant hostesses, Mrs. J. B. Wilder and Miss Martharene Pitts, served a refresh ment plate, carrying out the St. Pat rick’s day motif. St. Patrick's Day Party , For Odds and Ends Club A delightful St. Patrick’s day party was given oy misses Margaret ana Katherine Blakely on Tuesday eve ning when they entertained members of the “Odds and Ends" book club and several additional guests. A handsome potted Uly was used id the living room with bouquets of jonquils adorning the rooms and forming centerpieces for the dining table and smaller tables appointed for supper. Christian Endeavor Gives "Lovers Party" The Council of the Young People’s Christian Endeavor of Thomwell Me morial church entertained on Satur day evening at the NeUie Scott li brary, honoring Mr. and Mrs. DeWese Lloyd, who were recently married, and Miss Agnes Hope Gwaltney and Allen Jacobs, whose wedding will take place soon. Mr. Jacobs is presi dent of the Christian Endeavor. Appropriate decoration of balloons and hearts with streamers effective ly carrying out a red and white color note made a pretty setting for the party. Amusing games and contests entertained the guests, after which cake, coffee and candy were served. Gifts were presented to the honor guests. The council members were assist ed in entertaining by Miss Elizabeth Aker; and Miss Leta McIntyre. Music Club Meets With Mrs. Baker The Music club met on last Wed nesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Kenneth N. Baker with Mrs. George R. Blalock, Mrs. Tom Addison, Mrs. Rembert Truluck and Mrs. Eugene Johnson as assistant hostesses. The program, a presentation of Polish music and the life of Pade rewski, was arranged by Mrs. John j G. Barden, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. James P. Sloan. Mrs. Barden gave a review of the life of Paderewski which Mrs. Baker illustrated at in tervals by playing a number of his compositions and several other selec tions. “Tribute to Paderewski" was given by Mrs. Sloan. Minutes of the last meeting were read and announcement made that at the last meeting of the year in May a vote will be taken to see if mem bers desire to federate. The April meeting will be held at the Baptist church* with each member inviting a guest. During the afternoon the hostesses served dainty refreshments. . Workman of Goldville. He graduated at the University of South Carolina in 1937 and is now an in structor in aviation at Douglas, Ga., where the couple will reside.
