New York, Dec. 10. — Federal ex
penditures in October, amounting to
$2,089,000,000 were larger than in
any single month since the soldiers
bonus was paid in June 1936, ac
cording to the Alexander Hamilton
institute. In fact, expenditures in Oc
tober were nearly as large as the
$2,347,000,000 spent in June 1936.
Expenditures in October this year
were over double the $870,000,000
spent in the corresponding month
last year.
Although receipts in October were
also larger than a year ago, they
simounted to only $445,000,000 or less
than a quarter of the amount spent.
As a result expenditures exce^ed_
receipts by $1,644,000,000, the larg-I
est deficit since the defense program
started.
In addition, trust account expendi- j
tures exceed^ receipts by $225,000,-'
000. Consequently the actual deficit
in October this year, after allowing
for debt retirement, was $1,862,000,-
000.
The entire deficit in October was
met by borrowing. In addition, the
government borrowed $376,000,000
which was used to build the treasury
balance. The result was a rise in the
debt to a new high record of $53,-
584,000,000. This represented an in
crease of $9,477,000,000 over the debt
at the end of October last year.
Expenditures during the first fo\ir
months of the current fiscal year
amounted to $7,135,000,000. This
amount exceeded expenditures in
any full year prior to 1935, with the
exception of 1918 and 1919 when the
government was financing the last
war.
Despite the large amount spent
during the first four months of the
current fiscal year, spending was be
low the rate which is in prospect
during the remainder of this year.'
